Save the Massachusetts Junior Conservation Camp
We, the undersigned call upon the Chesterfield Zoning Board of Appeals to reconsider the decision of the Cease and Desist Order and the decision to cease renting the facilities to outside groups. The Chesterfield Scout Reservation provides a comfortable camp suitable for the Massachusetts Junior Conservation Camp (MJCC). This program has inspired the careers of some of our current leaders who protect our natural heritage. The program introduces youth to the ethical concepts and knowledge essential to a lifetime of properly enjoying our natural resources and the leisure activities that depend on their careful stewardship. The program covers subjects such as fish and pond life, forestry and wildlife management. It also provides outdoor skill subjects such as archery, basic camping, fly and spin casting, first aid, and shotgun shooting. Basic Hunter Education and a Boat Safety course are major parts of the camp program. Certification in Bow Hunter education is optional. This program brings campers in contact with experts on many aspects of natural resource management and outdoor recreation. Resident camp counselors are experienced outdoorsmen and women with a strong commitment to conservation. Certified lifeguards and medical staff are always available 24/7. The MJCC is a non-profit tax exempt corporation. This program is sponsored by the Gun Owners Action League, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, Massachusetts Dept.of Conservation and Recreation and the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Global warming is one of the serious threats facing wildlife and our environment today. For this reason alone we feel that it is important for the MJCC to continue. The program offers students an educational experience that will inspire some students to pursue environmental careers as they will become tommorow's leaders. We ask that you support the program by allowing the MJCC to continue the use of the facilities at the Chesterfield Scout Reservation. Thank you for your support!
