In 2016 stats Canada has shown that people over the age of 55 make up 27.5% of the total population in Terrace. It is predicted that this number will continue to increase.....and we need to address the transportation gaps in our community.

With the limited hours, and the unavailability to pick people up close to their homes for same day bookings, seniors in our community are missing medical appointments, social outings, and family gatherings.

We in the Seniors Programs at Volunteer Terrace have heard your stories, and it's time to see results!

Please sign this petition if you feel our community is in need of a better handyDART system, and help make our community more accessible to seniors!

Update **We also have heard that the handyDart will not go to Kitsumkalum. I heard a sad story of an elderly man today, who lives off reserve, and can't get on reserve to visit his family.

Updates

April 10, 2018

I have been documenting every story you share about missed appointments and lost connections with family. This frustration is growing because the current system forces our neighbors to choose between isolation and basic necessities. I am currently compiling these experiences to present directly to those controlling the transit budget.

April 10, 2018

Seeing this momentum continue gives me so much hope for neighbors like the man I met who was barred from visiting his own family. It proves that our town recognizes how these broken transit links isolate the people we love most.

Desperately needed in our area ! Elderly have to wait for hours at times , at the hospital or Dr office to be picked up after an appointment.

Not only does Handi-dart not run after 4:00, meaning I couldn’t have a life ( for example, work past 4 pm, go for dinner or a movie!)I had to book two weeks in advance if I wanted to use the service! Do YOU know where you are meeting your friends two weeks from today for lunch? No? Me either!!!!

Signing because this winter too many seniors and persons with mobility challenges were housebound due to snow piled up against bus access so wheelchairs could not board buses while seniors could not climb over snow banks. Moreover, the downtown sidewalks were impossible to navigate a wheelchair. It is understandable for delays in sidewalk clearance the day of snowfall, but the sidewalks were dangerous and icy for weeks.

We should never restrict seniors there activities. They often feel they rely on family and friends to much and they just won't go out and miss out on group activities or very important appointments.

I have heard that before as well, I wonder why that is when we have heard of so many people saying they have to book 2 weeks in advance, sometimes they don't show up, or are very late.
