We, The Gunn parent community, who have signed this petition, are in support of keeping the weighted-GPA (wGPA) for our students at Gunn High School. Recently, The board of PAUSD has discussed potential removal of the the weighted-GPA as an attempt to reduce stress and create uniformity across the two Palo Alto High Schools, in addition to helping the historically underrepresented students (HUR). At the PAUSD board meeting on Tuesday Oct. 18th, 2016, several Gunn students attended and voiced their support in keeping the weighted-GPA. We thank the board for continuing to look for ways to improve our children's education; but this measure has unintended negative consequences, that perhaps, has not been well thought through. We, the parents at Gunn support our children and also want the w-GPA to remain at Gunn. This is not a source of stress for our children. In fact, removal of wGPA will add stress to our children because they will have to stress significantly more over maintaining an A, and preserving their GPA. Most likely the students will opt for the less challenging, non-AP class just to preserve their GPA. An unintended consequence of this is that the HUR students will be pushed to the lower end of the curve in the classroom that would have these highly motivated students. This will result in lowering of the HUR GPA by pushing them further down the curve. As the students who addressed the board so succinctly on Oct.18th, the w-GPA helps students qualify for college loans that affects their choice of college and impacts them for decades beyond the four year college experience. The burden of student loans impacts the life of each of our students for the lifetime of their student loan. We, the parents do not want to limit our children's choices in this way. We, the parents stand with our students is support of keeping the w-GPA at Gunn.
