The rush hour traffic on Grand Avenue leading to Atlantic Avenue makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross, even within the crosswalk. Neighborhood residents have voiced concern that drivers do not stop to give pedestrians the right of way.
There are currently two stop signs for the east-west traffic on Lefferts Place, therefore, a third stop sign for the one-way traffic on Grand Avenue would allow drivers to cross Grand easily and safely during peak congestion times.
Our most recent request submitted to the NYC Department of Transportation was rejected, citing that an analysis completed by The Division of Signals and Engineering did not warrant a stop sign. However, we are confident that the pedestrian volume on Grand Avenue and Lefferts Place is deserving of a stop sign and that installation of such would greatly improve safety conditions for pedestrians and drivers alike.
We are now turning to the local community for support to add the stop sign. We hope that you will support our efforts.
A stop sign at Grand and Lefferts Place is desperately needed. I have two small children and we cross that intersection multiple times a day. Due to the angle of Grand and on-street parking, it is sometimes impossible to see oncoming traffic until you step out into the middle of it! It's a very dangerous intersection. Congestion build-up at rushhour for access to Atlantic Ave also means that to cross Grand, you have to weave around cars blocking the intersection.
