Imagine working hard to not get a reward that you rightfully deserve. This is what happens yearly to students all across Grand Erie due to the ludicrous decision to have a graduation ceremony months after finishing high school. The terrible timing of such a monumental event leads to countless individuals to not only disrupt their continued education, but rob them of what should be a night of pride and achievement. So many students have not been able to, and will not be able to, attend their graduation ceremony due to the poor timing of it. Time and time again, students have attempted to have this change, yet no change has been made. It is now that we call to you, all the members of this outstanding school board, or rather community, to help us make a difference. Not only for ourselves, but for all future graduates of the GEDSB.

We are fighting for everyone. We are proposing a graduation that includes all of the class regardless of their marks, so everyone can walk across the stage together. We understand that there are some who need to take summer school or receive additional credits to graduate fully, this proposal will include them. The way the system runs doesn't take into consideration those who study abroad who need to spend time and money to come back for one night, or those who are too busy with post secondary. We believe that stand-in diplomas would be an excellent alternative for these students. It allows them to join their peers on the stage for this incredible event, while still leaving the time and room necessary for them to finish their education.

We ask that you, each and every person that has read this message, to contribute to this cause by filling out this petition. If enough people voice their opinions, the school board will not be able to ignore our cheers for change. #GEDSB we, and many other students like us, are Graduates Rejecting Absurd Dates (#G.R.A.D)! P.S. PARENTS AND OTHER GEDSB SCHOOLS ARE WELCOME TO SIGN!

I have spent this week reading through the messages you left here and they confirm exactly what I felt when I started this. It is heartbreaking to hear from so many of you who had to choose between your tuition or a flight home just to walk across that stage. We are drafting a formal request to the board this weekend to highlight these personal stories.

Seeing this much momentum reminds me of the nights I spent worrying about how I would afford to fly back for my own ceremony. It is clear I am not the only one who felt robbed of a proper graduation experience. We are finally building the pressure needed to show the board that our time matters.

I attended SCS and for my graduation, I had to take time out of my school schedule to come back to walk across the stage and get my diploma. It also cost me money out of my savings for attending college to come back due to me studying away from home. I fully support this and hope others will take the time to sign as well.

I support my granddaughter, Kallyna, and all of the other students as well ! A graduation ceremony is so much more meaningful when it occurs shortly after the end of the school year ! This is a huge accomplishment and delaying the ceremony does cause significant issues i.e. low attendance, less enthusiasm, etc.

I’m graduated from SCS in the eighties. Commencement ceremonies were in November the year following grad and very poorly attended.

I’m leaving the country and when I graduate I’m not flying back just to receive my diploma in person for a night walk across a stage and shake hands when they can do that just after exams or the beginning of summer not 3 months after people leave

All schools as well need to discuss dates so not the same night for example have family going to HT and family going to SCS will graduate same year and when grads fall on same night family and grandparents have to choose which family member to graduate and someone loses out

graduation should be in June.....too many are unable to atten what they have worked so hard for. A diploma is just a piece of paper I am sure the graduates would accept a fake dipolma in June and have the real one mailed later. Highschool graduation is a milestone in their lives....have it when they can all attend! Give them the send off they deserve.....have it in June....HT does!

Change the graduation date! My kid should be able to have her graduation at a normal time before headibg to college. Alot of kids will miss attending if its post poned so long!!!

The fact that we have to ‘graduate’ in September or October is absurd and simply results in low attendance, enthusiasm, and pride
