This petition aims to collect data and signatures of students of the University of Vienna who wrote the gene expression exam online on July 3, 2020. With their signature (name or matriculation number) the students agree to participate in a collective complaint regarding the following points:

-Time provided was not enough to answer 6 implementation-questions (plus if additional sketches have to be made). -It was communicated by Prof. Dr. Decker (see slides) that there will be 2 questions from his side with one of them being MC. But instead 4 questions were given. We would have expected a change to be communicated in advance. -The questions of both Professors were asked in an extremely vague manner. In forums students are still discussing what knowledge you wanted to query here. -Many students knew right from the start that they would not be able to pass the exam within the given time frame. The enormous time pressure has completely disrupted many. -Inconsistencies regarding the upload of the files. You could read in the instruction that the format .jpg is not accepted and at the same time you read below that this format can be uploaded. People who tried to upload .jpg lost valuable time. -The given time was too short to upload sketches, because they had to be photographed with the phone, transferred to the computer, changed from jpg to pdf. Not every student is familiar with this. -Prof. Dr. Moll did not stick to the dates of her lectures when uploading her units. Three units were made available only one week before the exam. For working students this fact is severely disadvantageous. -The quality of Prof. Dr. Moll's recordings was limited. The audio tracks overlapped and were very quiet. Sentences constantly broke off in the middle. It was therefore very tiring to follow the phrasing.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you have joined this effort to address what happened during the exam. This momentum belongs entirely to you and your willingness to speak up about these unfair conditions. Thank you for showing that we are not alone in this frustration.

This test was not set up as we were told on the first day of class. Namely, each section would have two questions. To understand fairness of the test, half of the class should pass at the evaluation level of 51%, a 4. This is standard practice at many of the top universities as there are many variables outside of the students’ control that affect performance. If 80% of the students are unable to pass the exam, it implies that the questions were poorly structured or the material was not delivered in such a way to pass the exam, rather than any students’ failure to study. I personally spent 40 hours in addition to listening to the lectures with this material and I am not sure that I will pass. This is unacceptable.

It was definitely insufficient time for answering 6 questions from which two questions are needed to draw. In my case, I have not found any time to upload picture. Due to my third attempt of this exam, I have prepared it quite efficiently. Unfortunately, for this shortage of time and unclear questions I couldn’t have done the exam as I had expected.

I agree with everybody else here that the questions just weren't clear enough for the amount of time we had and I'd just like to add that I think it's weird that there's never any assessment criteria on our exams. For this exam I would have liked to know how many points I would need to pass and if I need to have a certain amount of points in each part (so for Moll and Decker). Had I known that I could pass getting all my points from the Decker part, for example, I would have just skipped Prof. Molls confusing questions and focused my entire time on getting the answers for the other part right.

the form of the exam it was impossible to be done in only one hour. the questions weren't clear, and panicking that I'm losing time reading the question, I lost points by answering wrong. it was the most stressful thing. I needed a lot of time to understand the question and then no time to answer. the question about drawing the diagram, even if I tried, no way I could photograph it and upload it on time. so that question it was clear for making the students fail.

Also the formulation of the questions was very weard and with molls audios ist wasn‘t possible to prepare for this exam. And we should Send this Petition also to eg prof Hamilton or other persons involved in the Organisation of mikrobio exams

I would also agree that the time was rather short considering that you had to download all materials for the exam and at the end you had to convert the answers in the correct format and then upload. Also the upload option was rather confusing. At the end of upload I got an error message and then I couldn't reupload anything again. I don't know now is it because the time run out or because I already uploaded my files.
