The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the legislative amendment requiring long-term visa holders to pass our licensing test will proceed to the select committee. This policy shift reflects the sustained pressure from our 8,476 signatures regarding road safety standards. My team will now monitor the implementation phase to ensure …
That the House pass legislation requiring any visitor to New Zealand who is issued with a visa for a period longer than 3 months, and who wishes to drive a vehicle while in the country, be required to sit a full New Zealand driver’s licence test and be issued with a New Zealand Driver’s Licence.
We are approaching 5,000 signatures which provides the necessary leverage for the formal policy briefing I am preparing for the Transport Select Committee. Please focus your efforts on direct outreach to ensure we cross this threshold before I submit the documentation next week.

I think anyone driving in NZ should have to pass the full driver's test, not just those who are in NZ for longer than three months. I have this opinion as a result of seeing the atrocious driving by tourists around the Aoraki Mt Cook national park.

Come on National goverment - People are being killed by foreign drivers getting into rentals and straight onto the road trip without any stand down after a long flight or any test to gauge skill levels for driving. Really poor sector management !!

NZ roads can be windy, hilly and at time narrow. Passing is not always possible and visibility limited. Respect for these conditions is difficult to teach, therefore taking time to learn and experience is surely the only way to ensure road safety.

Yes! Thats what I've been talking about since I came to NZ in 2012. I was stunned that I could just go to AA and get a New Zealand drivers licence just by handing in my german licence, without having to sit a test or be handed a road code or anything!

I was close to having a head on crash with a Asian driver on Nixon Rd after finishing my shift one night at The Riverhead. After rounding a corner his car was on my side & heading straight for me. If i had been 1min earIier I wouldn't have seen him.

Foreign drivers must sit New Zealand Drivers Licence - both a theory test (Road code) and a practical test to ensure they know and are able to drive in New Zealand, especially those who are from countries where they drive on right hand side of the road.

All overseas people driving on our roads need to obtain a NZ drivers license. Make them pay more than what NZers have to pay
