The City of Evansville currently does not have an ordinance that allows for "backyard hen keeping."

Backyard Chicken keeping has the following benefits:

1) Economic, Nutritional benefits: Keeping backyard chickens gives residents an opportunity to participate in local and sustainable food practices, creates food security, expands local food supply and gives people delicious eggs.
2) Educational: Expands educational opportunities for children in the community (i.e. 4H) and provides an opportutity to learn responsibility and compassion for animals.
3) Improves soil health: Decreases pests, weed seeds and creates nitrogen-rich, organic fertilizer.
4) Easy and Fun: Chickens (hens) are quiet, have low space requirements, and are easy to manage.

We respectfully request that the City of Evansville, Wisconsin implement an ordinance that would allow residents to keep a limited number of hens under rules established by the city.

Updates

July 5, 2016

The city council expects us to just roll over and accept their refusal to modernize our local laws. This surge in support proves that Evansville residents are fed up with being told how to manage their own properties.

It's time for us to live more sustainable lives. Allowing chickens is a small way of helping us control what we eat and live more healthful lives.

With reasonable regulations regarding how many chickens a person could keep within the city limits, I can't think of any reason why our city government should deny residents the right to own chickens. Many cities allow urban chickens, including communities like Oregon and Madison.

About 10 years ago, there was some discussion about homeowners having backyard chicken, but there were also many misconceptions, which is why it did not go anywhere. I am glad to see the discussion returning.

I have owned chickens for many years. They are a delightful, easy way of introducing and educating folks (especially kids!) to sustainable food systems and animal husbandry. There are , many, many models for setting guidelines- if we can accommodate for dogs and cats, we can accommodate for chickens.

I would greatly enjoy having chickens in my yard to supply fresh, chemical free eggs for my family. It would also be a means to show my children care of farm animals, where food comes from, and responsibilities. Thank you for your time.

I raised chickens for 4-H and transitioned into FFA and showing birds all over the Midwest through college. I'd love to see chickens brought to evansville!

I think residents should be allowed to have hens . No noise, fun to have, not smelly, good eggs.
