There are cinemas all over Thailand showing films from all over the world, including their own very good films. They make the majority of their films in Thai, which are then subtitled in various languages for screenings in other countries. Rarely are they dubbed as this robs the movie of its atmosphere and is a practice roundly condemned by most moviegoers. In Thailand most major towns and almost all tourist destinations will screen movies with their original soundtrack with Thai subtitles when necessary. If you go to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Ko Samui, Khorat, Chiang Mai to name just a few, cinemas there screen movies this way. But come to Hua Hin, and go to the only cinema in town, the Major Cineplex in Market Village which has FOUR screens, and 99% of screenings are either Thai movies or English language movies dubbed into Thai. Consequently, on the rare occasion that they DO screen an English language movie, no one knows about it because we have given up checking, and the cinema do not announce such screenings. Even the Major Cineplex website is only available in Thai so the only way of checking is to go to the cinema and asking, which is always a wasted journey. When either the cinema or their head office are contacted they state that they do not show movies in English because there is no demand. When asked how they know, they respond 'because we asked our customers' - a self fulfilling prophecy if there ever was one! As people file into or come out of a cinema showing a Thai movie, or a movie dubbed into Thai, they are asked if they would like to see movies in English - what answer would you expect The people wanting these movies are not at the cinema because it is not showing what they want to see!!! So, we, the undersigned, are all either residents or visitors of Hua Hin, both Thai and foreign and are pleading Major Cineplex in Hua Hin to start regular screenings of movies in English. Even if it was only one of the screens and only one or two days a week, as long as we know the movies are on, we will come and watch them. This petition will be sent to both the Hua Hin Major cineplex and their Bangkok head office by 30th September 2009. We hope there will be enough signatures to convince them that there is a demand for original soundtrack movies, and that if they agree to start screenings they need to tell everyone!
