We the undersigned concerned citizens in Cork are writing to you to express our distress over the photos of individuals you have displayed on your front windows in Vibes and Scribes on Lavitt’s Quay. We find the photos along with the caption “beware” both inappropriate and offensive. We acknowledge that you may have a grievance against certain individuals, however your current display does not give this impression. Rather, the display implies that all Roma people are dangerous. Since the display does not communicate your particular grievance against these specific individuals, the display is in danger of conjuring racist sentiment that is unfortunately prevalent in Irish society against the Roma people. It is for these reasons that we urge you to remove these photos immediately. Though we acknowledge and fully support you and your employee’s right to work in a safe environment, we do not believe the actions you have taken as regards this display will lead to positive outcomes for any persons. We encourage you to take down the photos of the individuals on display in your store, and commit ourselves not to purchase any items from Vibes and Scribes until you have done this. We hope that you will receive this letter with the understanding that we are concerned for the safety of our entire community. We believe appropriate and sustainable avenues for addressing your grievances are available to you, and we encourage you to explore these options. Sincerely,
