We, the undersigned residents of the Kester Ridge neighborhood in Van Nuys, CA, 91411, urge you to investigate and directly address the improper activity going on at the residential property located at 6537 Columbus Ave, Van Nuys, CA, 91411.

This residential property, in violation of using a residence as a business, is operating as an unlicensed, illegal junk yard housing 50+ cars, trucks, boats and jet skis filled with oil and gasoline. These numerous vehicles present consequential danger to our neighborhood such as but not limited to: extreme fire danger to surrounding dwellings including a new 60+ unit apartment house constructed of wood, children getting hurt or locked in a vehicle, environmental hazard of vehicles leaking toxins into soil.

Additionally, this unlicensed, illegal junkyard is an improper use of a residence and is degrading the neighborhood and affecting the residents and real estate values. Large, loud trucks that carry cars, boats and trucks load and unload at all hours are directly violating the local noise ordinance. Further, the improper use of the residence to house 50 plus vehicles is a blight in Van Nuys, more specifically the Kester Ridge area, and is directly sabotaging the residents efforts to improve and rejuvenate this long standing Los Angeles neighborhood.

Updates

I have been spending my time filing formal reports with the city inspector to force them to acknowledge the fire hazard sitting right next to our homes. The lack of a response from the property owner is frustrating but it only confirms that we have to keep applying pressure to local officials until they act.

Seeing this level of support confirms that my neighbors are just as worried as I am about the fire hazard in our own backyards. We have undeniable momentum now and it is time for the city to acknowledge the danger threatening our families.

This would not be allowed in Beverly Hills; why should Van Nuys be any different. This is unsafe, illegal, and unsightly. Please clean it up and sell the house to a family that will get proper use out of the property and enjoy area.

This is a dangerous situation for our neighborhood. We have been trying to get something done for at least two years. It's time to take our concerns seriously.

The city shall take this as formal notice of the hazardous condition and attractive nuisance that this property is. If an injury to an individual or property damage occurs as a result of this property the city shall be liable.

The tiny front yard often has between 8-12 vehicles parked on it, most of which do not have license plates. It's a tremendous eyesore, and directly impacts the sale price of properties in the area. We've waited for years for the DBS to solve the problem. Fining the property owner solves nothing.
