We have started this petition on behalf of most of the students of Muslim descent that currently are attending Dearborn Public Schools. We have recently been informed of the date changes made to graduation dates prior to this year, & unfortunately this has brought many of us concern. We had originally planned to have our graduation ceremonies be held on the dates they are usually held on every year; the 15th, 16th, & 17th of June. But we are now being told that the dates have changed to the 6th, 7th, & 8th. Our biggest concern is the fact that almost every Muslim student will be fasting those days due to the holy month of Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, we will be deprived of water until 9 pm, sitting in the scorching hot June sun for hours during our graduation ceremonies. The two do not mix well, and learning from past experiences, can cause instant dehydration and light-headedness. Having no food in your system is hard enough, so to be sitting in direct sunlight can really up the hardship. We are requesting that the dates can be looked at & altered to our needs. Having our ceremonies on the 15th, 16th, & 17th ensures that we are stable enough to get through the long day, & look forward to the day after our ceremonies have completed, since the Eid holiday is also on those days. So, if you can please sign this petition in order to make a change in these dates and make it easier for all of us to have a graduation we can actually look forward to. Let's all unite as one senior class to make a change for all of us. This petition will be sent to the board of education and to the principles of Dearborn High, Edsel Ford, and Fordson. Our goal with this petition is to change the dates and prove to the schools that having our graduation on the day of Eid isn't really a huge concern of ours.

We just hit 250 signatures and the school board still refuses to listen to our concerns. They think they can ignore us while we suffer in the heat but this number proves we are not going anywhere.

The administration thinks they can ignore us while we suffer in the heat during Ramadan. We are almost at one hundred signatures so push this link to everyone you know right now and force them to pay attention.

@Sabah- Agreed. The fact remains that students & parents do not have an issue with graduation being held on the day of Eid, but with the school board has the thought that the graduation ceremonies being held on the days of Eid would be problematic to families observing the holiday, which is not the case. Problematic would rushing to get home in time to break our fasts, while we should be enjoying the rest of our nights with family and friends after the commencement. One of the biggest days of our lives, & it should be spent swiftly.

The scorching heat, constant thirst and hunger pangs make it very difficult to concentrate on anything. So please put yourself in our shoes!!

As a student i would really love to have the ceremony either on the 15th, 16th, or 17th of june. Fasting the same day as the ceremony will affect many students along with the parents supporting the grads, it would be highly appreciated if you accept the offer

Why the sudden change? It's been good during the second week of July since forever. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This choice literally benefits no one.

I am graduating this year and would feel much more comfortable being able to stay hydrated during my graduation.

It would be really appreciated to be considerate of all communities. Don’t let one of the best days of their life be so torturous.
