While we support making helmet use voluntary, we acknowledge that city council probably will not eliminate bicycle helmet fines - even though it is proven they reduce ridership. We think a lighter approach to helmet legislation is a better approach. Let's start the conversation in city council and aim to reduce the current fine to maximum $12. The current $141.16 fine is unreasonably high and threatens/scares people from cycling. It makes cyclists seem like criminals for minor infractions concerning their own safety and choice. Many places do not require you to wear a helmet: - Montreal - Sackville, NB - Toronto - Ottawa - All of Europe - Most of the rest of the world Cycling experts and city planners have opposed the use of helmets, claiming that helmets discourage cycling by making it less convenient, less comfortable, and less fashionable. They also mention the possibility that helmets would "make cycling more dangerous by giving cyclists a false sense of safety and thus encouraging riskier riding behaviour." (wiki) Whether you agree or disagree with people being discouraged by helmets - it happens. Let's take a step toward making cycling normal!

141 dollars is crazy. i have friends who dont ride because they are scared of getting stuck with a fine for something that should be a personal choice. lets fix this halifax.

WAY too expensive. police have better things to do than harass people on bikes.
