I am getting a petition together with a number of signatures to show how dangerous it is for cyclists and motor vehicles to travel on the same roads together, the law states that a bicycle should be treated as a car and travel down the road as a car would using signals and stopping for lights, however I feel that is not nessicary and highly dangerous as a bicycle does not go nearly as fast as a car, when you have a line up of cars coming down the road unable to go any fast then maximum 5 or 10 due to the bicycle going directly down the road infront of you makes driving fairly difficult, even those who are along the shoulder on a bike i know in Truro it’s not often to safely get a spot to pull around a cyclist when there are cars and trucks coming down close on the other side. My experience yesterday with a cyclist was just about enough. I drove behind a cyclist for a good 200 blocks he was driving directly down the centre of the road and the cars behind me were just a honking and beeping, the cyclist then used the turning hand signal to signify they were turning, as they did, he crossed the yellow line I proceeded to pick up speed and at the last second he flew back over infront of my car and decided not to turn resulting in slamming my breaks on and continuing to go slow, later on at the lights that same cyclist was infront of a brown truck that I was behind and they proceeded down the road the same way that I did, just going over a bridge the brown truck thought he saw what was a safe opening to go around him resulting in cutting off the entire lane of left oncoming traffic they had to swerve and pull completely off
The road to save theirselves because the truck that tried to go around him could not do so safely due to the fact the cyclist was directly in the centre of the street rather then on the shoulder or sidewalk, later that same night it was reported on the radio that a cyclist was hit by a vehicle, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t the same cyclist, if anyone feels like I do I’m making this Petition to have it banned for bicycles to bike on busy streets holding up traffic and making it unsafe to pass them. If they feel it’s necessary to bike on the road I am urging Truro Nova Scotia or any other city and town who’s residents may agree. to install dedicated biking lanes along side of the roads for bikers who wish to bike along, its a lot safer in the long run, when you have a cyclist being hit every other week and wonder why its happening please sit back and consider the reasons that is happening to them.
