WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DO HEREBY PETITION ON BEHALF OF THE COALITION OF THEATRES OF COLOR and do hereby assert that the local City and State governments of New York must be held accountable for the gross economic disparity and blatant discrepancy that exists between mainstream cultural institutions and community based cultural institutions.
The intention of this petition is to address and call attention to the inequitable distribution of the economic resources which are disproportionably allocated. It is imperative that we receive an adequate and equitable percentage of the financial resources distributed. The traditions and culture of indigenous people in urban communities in the City and State of New York must be financially sustained.
The Coalition of Theatres of Color is a newly formed partnership of 16 of the oldest and most revered community based theatre institutions in the City and State of New York. I have been spending my days in meetings with city officials trying to force them to look at the books and explain why our cultural homes are being left behind. The silence from the people in charge is loud but it only strengthens our resolve to keep pushing for the resources we have earned. Your signatures have given me the leverage to demand a seat at the table so please keep the momentum going.
