We, the Students of Color, expect proper representation. As educators, it is your responsibility to prepare your students for the field they wish to be apart of and quite frankly we have been let down. Throughout the history of this department, the opportunities and work of People of Color has been neglected. The classes that are offered, lessons taught, the productions presented, and the faculty in its entirety fail to represent the culture of our community. Overtime, the students have conversed independently about these issues and the way it affects us. Now, especially with the influx of Students of Color over the past few years, changes NEED to be made. As a result of this petition, we demand the same opportunities our white counterparts receive:

Productions that show POC as individuals and not caricatures

Courses that bring attention to our community and differences

An open environment to bring attention to the insensitive remarks made by our educators (because they EXIST)

And most importantly, Proper representation in the staff as a whole for the Students of Color. One Part-time employee is not proper representation. we deserve a staff that reflects the world we live in. They should be in the room for ALL meetings and decisions made for the "betterment" of the department, on campus for the students to see and recognize, and an actual voice that is heard and respected. Until this is implemented, no amount of inner thought or show change will matter.

Until these are achieved, until an actual promise is made, these demands will remain. There is no half doing Inclusion and Representation. Make the right decision, and change for the better.

The department has ignored our requests for a meeting so far. We are documenting every instance of neglect until they finally listen.

The momentum is undeniable now. Department leadership has no choice but to listen to us.

We have a story to! We have a voice too! We don’t deserve to be put last and OVER thought at every turn. We deserve to have our stories told . We deserve to be represented just like everybody else.

DO NOT do this play! This perpetuates stereotypes that the average black person has to fight against EVERY SINGLE DAY! It’s not funny, it’s not right, it’s not relatable it’s EMBARRASSING. As an educated person of color, this should never be how you represent your people. Blacks are a marginalized, misunderstood and misrepresented group of people. Do not add to this stereotype by making our people appear like idiots.
