Catering is and always has been an important part of a shoot. Cast and crew require food and drink to keep working hard and to have enough energy to make a film we are proud of. The physical and mental effort the whole crew put into the production is so important for us to make the best films we can.
The production teams are all aware that the generous budgets we receive should be spent 'on the screen' and production design / actors' expenses / equipment comes first, but having a meal or even just snacks and some drinks on set is also so important. We never spend excessive amounts, with most shoots just enough food is bought so that by the time we wrap there is little/no food left.
We are students, we are already in debt and when we are busy filming on set we don't want to worry about where our money is going or concerned that the food needs to be equally split between each crew member because we have all put the same amount of money into the 'kitty' approach.
Instead of restricting the budget so no catering can be claimed, maybe there could be a limit implemented, or certain restrictions e.g. can't buy takeaways for every meal. However, we are students trusted to spend a budget for the films we make, if we choose to spend it on something that hinders the production of the film, it is a mistake we have made and a lesson we will learn.
We hope you listen to our concerns about this and allow the budget to be spent on catering.

"Industry standard" is a term that is thrown around this course a lot. We are ostensibly being taught the industry standard approaches to all departments, then out of the blue with zero consultation we are being told that our budgets can no longer cover the catering over the shooting period? What is this meant to teach? If you ran a shoot in the real industry and told crew to just send for themselves you would be have a crew that would stick around for more than a day. This is one of the most shortsighted moves I have seen this course make.
Crew catering is a health and safety issue. On site catering is the only sure-fire way of making sure your crew have the carbs they need to have healthy blood sugar through out the physical and mental challenge that is a shoot day. If blood sugar is allowed to dip, if fluids are not readily available, cognitive ability suffers - that's not a debatable point. In addition, no professional shoot doesn't pay for catering, the lack of catering a feature more associated with amateur filmmaking. Students do not pay for an amateur filmmaking experience.
Catering is one of the biggest portions of the budget. It has been a struggle to cover this cost previously and as we have been taught, 'an army marches on it's stomach'. I was in charge of the catering for last year's Ba3 Film Paper Planes and by cooking everything from scratch with the cheapest ingredients, it still cost around £500 to feed a crew of 20 for a week. Cutting this out of the budget will not only allow for a very unhappy and unproductive crew, but will also starve producers of the experience of budgeting for catering as they would have to in real life. Too many cuts have been made to this course. Do not let this be another one.
A £100,000 camera is worth nothing if the cam op hasnt eaten anything. The crews performance dictates the films quality, and so the budget should be spent on them just as much as the equipment.
It’s laughable to believe that banning catering from the budget would even work - I assume most of not all productions will use parts of the budget to pay for catering because it’s such a basic necessity on set, the only difference will be that we will have to feel guilty for feeding ourselves

filmmakers gotta eat. These filming days can get super long and the last thing you want to do when getting home is got to the shop for ingredients to meal prep.

Crafty is just as important as production, what if the shoot was in the middle of no where, how would we get our lunches? What if someone is without money (as most of us are, due to rent, bills and living cost struggles at home) are they supposed to go without food and starve? You get crafty covered in the real world, why cant we get crafty covered for university when we pay them over 9 THOUSAND POUNDS A YEAR.
