Crew catering is a health and safety issue. On site catering is the only sure-fire way of making sure your crew have the carbs they need to have healthy blood sugar through out the physical and mental challenge that is a shoot day. If blood sugar is allowed to dip, if fluids are not readily available, cognitive ability suffers - that's not a debatable point. In addition, no professional shoot doesn't pay for catering, the lack of catering a feature more associated with amateur filmmaking. Students do not pay for an amateur filmmaking experience.

The filmmaking experience at The Northern Film School acts to replica the industry standard way of doing things.. It is industry standard to cater for crew on sets and is a vital part of the producer/production managers job. Although I agree the majority of budget should be spent 'on screen' I still think we should be given the opportunity to atleast have the catering part funded. On all the shoots I have produced I have always catered for them at home, which has literally involved staying up til 3am making pasta bakes, cakes or cutting carrots to save the budget (allowing it to be spent on more important 'on screen' elements). Its hard enough to cater for a crew without subjecting us to financial difficulties as well. Its not like we're spending it on takeaways.. It's going on water, fruit and snacks that keep us all positive and healthy. It would be great to discuss this and find a middle ground that keeps everyone happy.

This is a course that seems to cut more and more every year, yet the price for it stays the same. Were filmmakers, not equipment, not tools, were people doing a job we love and that we're good at. Cutting the budget for catering is telling us were not important in the grand scheme of things. Not all of us can afford to cash out, some of us students can barely afford our apartments or food. Doing this to us is just giving us all the middle finger.

Honestly, why are we paying £9,250 each year to constantly be fobbed off with false promises or unnecessary cuts? Think about where we as filmmakers are starting from. We're not going to get the luxury of using high end, expensive kit from the beginning. Maybe buying new and improved cameras, that cost thousands, every year is stretching the budget. Food is essential to our well-being! Also, how are the Producers in the next few years going to learn how to properly cover all bases in their budgeting plan. Needs sorting out.

I fully understand that the budget should get spent ‘on te screen’, however, since we are not paying the actors and just to take some hassle off our shoulders while being in a stressful week of shooting, I believe that there should be some budget left for catering. I don’t want to demand anything in particular but would love to sit down and talk about it in order to find a solution we can all be happy with.

Catering is one of the biggest portions of the budget. It has been a struggle to cover this cost previously and as we have been taught, 'an army marches on it's stomach'. I was in charge of the catering for last year's Ba3 Film Paper Planes and by cooking everything from scratch with the cheapest ingredients, it still cost around £500 to feed a crew of 20 for a week. Cutting this out of the budget will not only allow for a very unhappy and unproductive crew, but will also starve producers of the experience of budgeting for catering as they would have to in real life. Too many cuts have been made to this course. Do not let this be another one.

We already pay £27750 for a very mimimal course, we cant afford to keep loosing content (steadicam, avid, pro tools, ect..) we definitely cant afford any more stretched budgets for the grad films.

after a long hard day of shooting on my £80k arri alexa, editing on my £5k+ maxed out spec imac, in the 3 storey building exclusively used by my course and its countless members of paid staff, i too wonder where my 9k a year is going and why my course administrators won’t give me free pizza for 3 days, even though on any other course and on any other given day i would be providing my own lunch. MEGA MEGA FUMING.

There are over a hundred people on this course each paying more than 9k for a year which is at least 1 Million in pounds, still we get a laughable 2.5k budget, 10 films totalling up to 25k and we cannot even provide the crew food ? What the hell is that other £975,000 is spent on?

A £100,000 camera is worth nothing if the cam op hasnt eaten anything. The crews performance dictates the films quality, and so the budget should be spent on them just as much as the equipment.

It’s laughable to believe that banning catering from the budget would even work - I assume most of not all productions will use parts of the budget to pay for catering because it’s such a basic necessity on set, the only difference will be that we will have to feel guilty for feeding ourselves
