We, the concerned residents of Memphis and Shelby County, call for the immediate resignation of School Board Member Towanna Murphy due to her recent public display of unacceptable behavior, including racist remarks and threats of deportation.
As a representative of one of Tennessee’s most diverse school districts, Ms. Murphy’s words and actions go against the values of inclusion, respect, and equity that our students and families deserve. Regardless of the context of the disagreement, there is no place for racism, xenophobia, or intimidation from anyone in public office—especially someone entrusted with shaping the future of our children.
Our community is watching, and we demand accountability. We deserve leaders who uplift every student and resident, not those who use their platforms to spread division.
By signing this petition, we are standing in solidarity with our Latino and immigrant communities and urging Towanna Murphy to do the right thing and step down immediately from the Memphis-Shelby County School Board.

She is not who we want representing MSCS. This is not her first altercation and it won't be her last. We have NO faith in her or the school board at this point. If nothing is done about this then we know that the board is NOT looking out for the best interest of the students or community.

She is supposed to be a representative of our school district. She is an adult and spending her time fighting with people on Facebook and threatening to deport them. Incredibly irresponsible, hateful, and ignorant.
As a staff member of a whole school board having all types of races as student this should not have cross her mind as a first response. Being a message she could have pause and rewrite it instead she proceed to type and sent the message there is a zero tolerance for this actions
She practically advocates for a new slave class made of a vulnerable minority group. Have you not learned anything at all? You are a bully and probably always have been. How do people like this get elected?

She clearly expresses her way in a unprofessional way and if she is capable to carry herself this way and unable to be professional and considerate of her words and actions than what can we expect on She will address or treat our children. She is unfit for this position.
