Understanding that the proposed Gowanus Rezoning is approaching a NYC procedural land use review, called a ULURP, we the undersigned Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Red Hook, Cobble Hill and Park Slope residents and property owners wish to:
Join CORD's call for a minimum of two (2) inter-agency panel town hall Q&A discussions on the rezoning of the Gowanus Canal to be organized and held by Community Board 6, so that the community can assess for itself if the City has the means, the resources and the will to TRULY plan for the impact of about 8,200 new housing units and an estimated 19,000 new residents. In order to give the community and the Community Board Members the time to absorb and assess all of the potential consequences of this rezoning, these meetings must be organized and held to take place well before the ULURP comes before the CB6 Land Use Committee for approval.

- FDNY Fire Department
- NYPD Police Department
- OEM . Office of Emergency Management
- EMT SERVICES Emergency Medical Personnel
- DSNY Sanitation Department
- DOE Education Department
- DOT Transportation and Traffic Department
- NYCT NYC Transit (All)
- DCP City Planning Department
- DEP NYC Environmental Protection (air, water, sewage)
- EPA Region 2 . US Dept of Environmental Protection (our Superfund team)
- PARKS Parks Department
- DEC, NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (brownfields including Public Place)
- MTA and Metropolitan Transit Authority (subways along with NYCT)
- FEMA Federal Emergency Department (flooding, natural disasters)

I ask for no changes to the current Gowanus zoning. The people who live here (including me) want to see the Gowanus develop gradually and organically. Allow the remediation of the Gowanus Canal to continue without the pressure of rezoning the uplands. Let the DEP figure out how they will manage the additional sewage created by 8,400 apartments (at least 16,800 toilets and 16,800 sinks) before you rezone. Before you rezone, allow the Gowanus Canal to become a pollution-free waterway, free of human waste contamination.
I have lived in Carroll Gardens for 23 years and have experienced first hand the rapid and (mostly) great revitalization of the area and the many changes that have resulted. I am now siding with my neighbors and CORD who demand responsible, thoughtful development that considers the community needs, not those of the developers and politicians who are trying to advance aggressive, out-sized even reckless plans to upzone Gowanus. CB6, we need your help!
So long as there are no regulatory controls limiting the level of sewage pathogens found in the canal water, it is reprehensible that CDP should allow housing along the banks of the canal. It is reckless that any elected official would support housing people along an open sewer in the name of providing "affordable housing".
Mitigation for Canal cleanup from City's real "timeline" should've been presented after Hurricane Sandy rather than causing displacements of small mom & pop shops.
This is the most consequential issue in CB6 in decades. Please give the community an opportunity to hear from City, State and Federal agencies so that we may understand the consequences of this massive proposed rezoning.
I want to make sure that our neighborhood won't be ruined by the rezoning. We need to make sure that Gowanus can handle the rezoning.

They need to finish cleaning up the canal before there is any discussion about rezoning and additional building. The politicians are thinking about themselves and their future campaigns and not the constituents they are supposed to be serving. It is disgraceful!
