I hereby call into action the community/neighborhood of Brookline located in Pittsburgh, PA. The action we are requesting you to acknowledge and agree to by signing this petition is to have the Brookline Recreation & Community Center located at 1399 Oakridge St. Pittsburgh, PA 15226, dedicated to one Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Richard Lopez Sr. The Brookline Rec Center was constructed in 1969 with 'Rudy' being one of the lead masons on the project. Since the opening of the center, Rudy has been playing basketball or 'shootin' hoops' there every day with the exception of the days it closed due to financial restraints of the city, renovations, and knee surgeries. During the renovations to the center in 2010, there were some questions that the drawings could not determine, below is an excerpt from Brookline Connection regarding what a help Rudy was:

Brookline Connection: When they remodeled the Rec a couple years back, there was some questions about the masonry and load-bearing capabilities of some of the walls. The drawings didn't provide conclusive evidence, so we just called Rudy. Hey, he built the walls. After a short walk-about it was decided that the place was built like a tank and that the walls were sound. Good job Rudy! Nothing like old school craftsmanship.

Rudy has been, and continues to be, a fixture at the center for the last 45 years. He has sponsored many basketball teams to get kids active, off the streets, and out of trouble. Join us in our quest to have this center he has given so much to dedicated, to someone so deserving, none other than Rudy himself.

I keep staring at the screen and honestly it feels like the whole neighborhood is finally nodding along to this idea. Rudy is going to be so surprised because he really just thinks he is heading to the court for a normal day of hoops and I am starting to think we might actually pull this off.

Mr. Lopez is not only the man I dream of being, but he actually talked me out of committing suicide without even knowing it. Because that is exactly the kind of person he is. i am forever in debt to him for saving my life and making me realize what is priority and what isnt. This is the man I dream to be, and if not for him, I wouldnt be able to share my story today. I would like to remain anonymous as I am embarassed that I was even at the point in my life. Mr. Lopez, you are my personal hero and a hero to this community I was a idiotic kid that you talked off the ledge, literally. I would love nothing more than to see this great man get this great honor!

Rudy is part of the furniture at the rec! Used to play ball with him back in the day and he always kept us kids in line. A true legend of the neighborhood.
