The proposal for the telecommunications tower near Big Pond has been officially withdrawn. I appreciate the 398 individuals who joined this effort to protect the character of our community. We will continue to monitor any future development plans for this site.

Big Pond is loved for its nature, beauty and simplicity. In an effort to protect these qualities I am signing this petition in opposition of a potential telecommunications tower and related facilities within the immediate vicinity of Big Pond, East Otis MA.
Consider that cell phone coverage in Otis is already quite good. A review of the three major providers websites (T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T) shows most of Otis and the surrounding area has high quality, high speed coverage. Thus an additional tower in a new location would offer little benefit.
Furthermore, the close proximity of a cell tower will have a negative impact on the value of nearby homes. Reduced home valuations longterm will lead to lower tax revenue for the Town of Otis, thus offsetting what economic gain may have come from leasing the land the cell tower is on.
The idea of a cell tower directly across from Camp Bonnie Brae, the nation’s longest, continuously operating Girl Scout Camp, seems inappropriate, especially when it offers little benefit to the surrounding community and ecosystem.

We are approaching the one hundred signature milestone for the protection of Big Pond. Please consider distributing this petition link to others who value the preservation of our local landscape before we present our case.

When my wife and I were building a house in Otis, the zoning board made sure we did not obstruct our neighbor’s view. A cell tower in close proximity of Big Pond will obstruct our view of the beautiful sunsets we have come to enjoy. Move the tower to another location where it does not obstruct anyone’s view.
There must be a better location than this. It's great to have a town beach for all Otis residents to enjoy at the north end of Big Pond. It would be a shame to have a 140 foot tower looming over such a peaceful town owned facility.
The area proposed will effect the ecosystem of Big Pond, Birds, reptiles,wildlife, along with the water quality of the lake, as a road will have to be cut through an area that is wet year round.
Please No, we all have excellent coverage and great beauty here also what about the impact on the bald eagles we have 1 pair an 2 babies out of 100 pairs in Massachusetts ?
Our island cottage directly faces this iconic sunset hill view…..please don’t scar it! Just because the town happens to own the land, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best location for a tower. Better, more inconspicuous locations should be sought if this is truly deemed a necessity.

In addition to the petition points, cell towers have been shown to reduce the bird population in their vicinity. A cell tower near Big Pond could be detrimental to our aquatic birds, including the eagle community on the lake.
