On behalf of the undersigned members, we respectfully submit this petition to voice our concerns about the recent changes and current discussions by the board of governors in relation to cigar smoking on club property.

Brooklawn has a long history of allowing members the enjoyment of smoking cigars while respecting the sensibilities of other members. With few exceptions, all members have been able to co-exist with little disruption to their enjoyment of the club for quite some time. To this day, the club actively utilizes “Cigar Night” (one of the most popular and highly attended member events) to introduce prospective new members to the club.

By submitting this petition, we want to register with the board of governors the sentiments of a large group of certificate holders that wish to continue to enjoy our wonderful club facilities in the long-held tradition to which we, and many others, have become accustomed. Our desire is to be able to continue to enjoy cigar smoking on club premises, consistent with past practice, but with the full expectation of applying the necessary discretion to ensure all members enjoy their time and use of club facilities.

Finally, we believe that the current rules and potential future restrictions on cigar smoking are wholly unnecessary, inappropriate, and do not take into consideration the perspective of a large section of the certificate holding members. As such, we respectfully request that cigar smoking remains acceptable in the following areas (subject to certain time restrictions):

Indoor:

  • Men's locker room (anytime),
  • Tree House (anytime)

Outdoor:

  • Golf course and practice facilities (anytime),
  • Putting green, corner patio area/ fireplace area (prior to 6pm dinner service),
  • Other patio areas including fire pit, couches, etc (prior to 6pm or with staff permission)

We recognize that there may be times that the Brooklawn staff may request cigar smokers relocate or extinguish their cigars during periods of peak attendance.
