We are petitioning for the building to be converted to a 100% smoke-free, which requires an amendment to the building’s declaration documents. Smoking is to be prohibited inside the premises, including individual condominiums units and common areas including lobbies, stairwells, and areas adjoining the swimming pool. There are designated smoking areas at the rear of the building and in the pool area, and these are to be maintained.

A smoke-free environment gives everyone the opportunity to breathe cleaner air. It gives an opportunity to live healthier lives.

Within multi-unit housing, smoke can travel between units. With a smoke-free policy, we eliminate the chance of toxic smoke traveling from one unit to another. The air in any given unit is shared with air from other units and common areas.

In the new world we now live in, a smoke-free environment is one of the best decisions we can make for each other and for our loved ones.

By eliminating our exposure to second-hand smoke, we are promoting our health and well-being. Smoke-free housing reduces risk of heart attacks, heart and lung disease, cancer and respiratory illness due to exposure to secondhand smoke.

Smoking doesn’t just impact our personal health – it also affects the buildings we live in, potentially increasing the risks of fire and property damage, raising insurance costs, increasing legal liability and more.

The adoption of smoke-free policies for condominiums is not discriminatory because the activity of smoking is not a protected right; an individual’s status as a smoker is not protected, and addiction to nicotine is not a disability that merits accommodation ( Per Smoke free Policies and Condominiums in Illinois).
