Amy Kates is currently in-charge of the requests for the use of Freedom Hall. The Boy Scout Troop 52 made a request to return to Freedom Hall on Friday nights. The request was denied by Ms. Kates.
Amy Kates reasons for not allowing Troop 52 at Freedom Hall:
Amy Kates has said "It would not be beneficial to the Cotuit Fire District" She also questioned if any of the members parents are tax payers. It should not matter because Boy Scout Troop 52 is a Cotuit Troop.
From the Couit Fire District Bylaws regarding the use of Freedom Hall:
The Prudential Committee shall be responsible for the maintenance and
operation of Freedom Hall. Cotuit and/or non-profit groups, whose activities are
consistent with the character of the hall and the village, shall be permitted to use the
building and its amenities at no charge. All other users shall pay a reasonable fee based upon schedules that shall be established by the Prudential Committee. All fees collected shall be returned to the General Fund.
Boy Scout Troop 52 is a long-standing Cotuit troop. Up until last year, the Boy Scouts held their meetings and activities at Freedom Hall. They had to leave because of the mold problems. Since then they have been at Cotuit Federated Church, but this fall the troop is doubling their size. They need more space, and Freedom Hall is where they would like to return, and meet on Friday evenings.

The emails I get from people frustrated by this denial are heavy to read but they remind me exactly why we started this fight in the first place. I have been spending my nights reviewing the bylaws to prepare for the next committee hearing. This process is exhausting but I am not planning on walking away from this.

Reaching this point has been an exhausting uphill climb but seeing the response confirms that people still care about our local kids having a place to meet. It is heavy work to keep fighting for space that used to be ours yet knowing I am not alone makes the continued push feel possible.

This is ridiculous. Those boys have been meeting there for years. Stop letting one person decide who gets to use a community building.
The scouts are a part of Cotuit. We should be encouraging them not pushing them out. Shame on the committee for allowing this.
Freedom hall belongs to the people not just amy kates. let the kids use the space!!!
My son is in this troop and we have lived here for 15 years. Honestly unbelievable.
Who does she think she is questioning if parents pay taxes? Total power trip. Let the scouts back in.
