We, the undersigned residents of Albany County, applaud the state's banning of single use plastic bags from our stores. Still, in order to better protect our environment we must encourage the use of re-usable shopping bags, rather than single-use paper bags. Paper bags use large amounts of water to be produced, take up significant space in landfills, and contribute to deforestation. We call on the Albany County Legislature to enact a fee on paper bags and promote the importance of reusables throughout our county.

The feedback I receive lately reflects a growing consensus that our reliance on paper alternatives is not a sustainable solution for our environment. I am currently preparing to present these arguments to the county legislators to ensure our concerns are properly considered during their next session.

Seeing this conversation grow across the county reminds me that many of us share the same hope for a more sustainable future. This momentum demonstrates a collective readiness to move beyond simple convenience toward thoughtful habits that protect our local environment.

This is a no brainer. If we don't start taking care of the environment, the environment will be unable to continue taking care of us. We continually forget that our very lives depend on respecting and protecting the air and water that we need to live. That includes trees. The amount of energy and resources used to cut and process trees into paper is enormous. We need to take responsibility for our lives and change our ways of doing things.
Almost everyone who I know has at least one reusable bag but forget to bring them into the store. By imposing a fee on paper bags customers will be motivated to bring in their renewable bags. Change is difficult but we can be retrained to change our habits.
The 5 cent fee will incentivize the use of totes. Doesn't everyone have many reuseable totes? Perhaps we can promote a "pass your extra reusable totes along" program. I have like 10!!!
We know from experience that plastic ban + fee is much more effective. Let's not trade plastic waste for paper. State law protects those on fixed incomes, so let's finish the job on this and move on to other pressing problems!
Cloth bags are so easy to use. Paper is not necessary for most needs and a 5 cent charge will discourage its use - though I suspect that few will really notice that addition to their shopping bill.
Save the planet. Do our part. Every bit counts.

Please do the right thing and the only thing that will encourage reusable shopping bags——charging people for paper bags. Without the charge you will just be going from plastic to paper waste...slightly better but let’s do it right. Thank you.
