There is a consultation taking place at the moment to limit the number of feeder school places that are given to Akiva. This means that Akiva children will not automatically get a place at JCOSS unless they already have a sibling there, but will have higher priority than other Jewish children. (it is a very complicated system with variable percentages in play).

Analysis for 2014 applications/September 2015 entry is that its likely that the majority, but not all, will be offered places in the first round, but that a handful are likely to miss out and they will then be dependent on others not taking up their offers, for example because some children will take up a place at a private school.

In future years JCOSS are retaining the right to amend the feeder % downwards which bodes even less well for Akiva kids.

The proposed changes can be seen herehttp://www.jcoss.org/assets/JCoSS-Admissions-Policy-2015-16-FINAL-PROPOSAL.pdf

We want to keep Akiva as a full quota feeder school to JCOSS.

We are the only feeder school without another feeder in close geographical proximity. And we share the same ideals as JCOSS and our children are valuable assets to the JCOSS community.

This move seems unfair and unwise. It is unfair because it gets families trapped that made costly decisions based on past promises. It is unwise as it sends scores of people back into the arms of the existing schools from which JCOSS sought to differentiate itself. A move that will have lots of unintended consequences.

The main reason for moving my daughter to Akiva was its feeder status to JCOSS. It's unfair to make the change after people moved to this school and have made changes (home move etc) accordingly.

Akiva should have priority over primary schools that are further away for JCOSS. Not only is that equitable (distant schools have easier access to schools closer to them, but it reduces children's travel and is more environmentally friendly.

JCOSS is the only option for progressive Jews, we showed our intentions early by sending out children to Progressive primary schools. It's untenable to change the rules when we'd already signed up to different ones AND when so many of us helped to create JCOSS in the first place.

JCOSS is not only a great school, but one that shares the ethics and ethos of Akiva School. Being forced to go to another school has not only academic implications - it affects our children's identity as curious, tolerant, open minded, knowledgeable and confident reform Jews.

Akiva children have no other Jewish feeder school. Some parents were assured by the Head Master as rexently as May 2013 that the admissions criteria would not be changing for the year 2015-16. Both of the other Jewish feeder school are also feeder schools for other Jewish schools.
