The city finally ruled in our favor and the permit issues are behind us. I am drained from this fight but the doors are staying open for the first responders and pets who need us. We will keep doing our work while staying alert for any further pushback.

San Francisco Dog Care business that cares for First Responders' dogs needs your support

We are reaching out to ask you for your support with an issue that's threatening our business.
The Grateful Dog, a small, minority, family-owned doggy daycare and boarding business in San Francisco, was originally permitted in 2009 under then-existing City requirements. Since then, the Planning Code requirements and definitions have changed, which include a more recent addition of a more specific “Kennel” category for our overnight boarding operations. The Grateful Dog updated this permit in a December 2018 hearing. We thank all of you that supported us then and spoke at the hearing on our behalf!
We are now up for a One-Year Review for this approved permit and now the city of San Francisco is adding additional subsequent requirements and permits for our continued operation at our SF location. Furthermore, our residential neighbors, who never complained in the prior 9 years of our operations, have flooded the City of San Francisco with frivolous complaints. They are trying to get our backyard usage revoked and ultimately get us shut down because they feel we're decreasing their property value (even though we all border the Lombard Street thoroughfare). Most of these neighbors moved into the neighborhood after our existence.
The City has supported our use for the past decade and continue to do so, however we need to continue to show the support of and need for our services. We've served you for over a decade and look forward to serving you for decades to come!
We'd greatly appreciate it if you could do 3 things to support The Grateful Dog,

2. Write a letter of support for our business.
3. Speak at our San Francisco Planning Commission Hearing(virtual).

The city keeps moving the goalposts and the noise from these neighbors is exhausting. I spend my days navigating permit paperwork instead of caring for the dogs who need us. We are staying in this fight because the service we provide to our first responders is worth the struggle.

The momentum behind this effort has grown into something I honestly did not think possible when we started this fight. I am exhausted by the constant legal hurdles but seeing this kind of public backing gives me the energy to keep going. We are not letting this place close down.

The Grateful Dog has been critical for me during this time of Coronavirus to be able to continue to work while creating a positive environment for my Dog. Not renewing this permit would have significant impact on many essential workers and community members in the neighborhood.
A small business that is a necessity for the community that is run dam well. Real estate prices should of been a concern before they bought or permit was approved. I am an SF born resident. Mahalo
Grateful dog is an essential business and cares for essential workers fur babies while they are off working 12-16 shifts. I support Grateful Dog, who supports essential workers, who continue to save lives and who support our community. We are all in this together!
I recently moved but I lived a block and a half from this business for 8 years and never heard of, a problem. It’s a well established responsible company and new neighbors who opted to move close by do not have the right to complain.
This type of business is needed by pet owners. The annual added requirements for business permits in SF are very costly and cumbersome. Please don't allow frivolous complaints from greedy, selfish people impact this well run, established business. Thank you.
Thank you for taking such great care of our dog! We couldn't imagine (or afford the drive) to take him anywhere else and manage our work from home reality. He NEEDS this escape and playtime as I am sure many other SF city dogs do!

Grateful Dog supplies an essential service for me, an essential frontline worker against COVID as an RN and Case Investigator for Public Health dept. I wouldn't be able to do my job with Grateful Dog. Please safeguard their business permit.
