We petitioners ask the City of Savannah ZBA and MPC to vote to deny both the special use of an Assembly Hall and attending parking variances requested by 611 Whitaker Street (dba The Whitman).
These variances would severely impact our residential neighborhood and the Landmark District in the following ways:
- An Assembly Hall would be incompatible, intensive, and a commercial use that will contribute to the decline in residential quality-of-life and character of neighborhoods in the Landmark District. This will add more noise, trash, and allow for large parties and attendees outside of what the neighborhood can bear.
- The Whitman already does not have sufficient parking to accommodate the 12-16 inn guests its website advertises, much less the up to 125 event guests touted by the facility that the variance would allow.

I owned 108 west Hall till 2000. Parking is such a problem in the area. Howard street is where we park our cars and the street is very narrow. Please do not create more of a problem in this area for the locals who have helped restore this area. You also have parking problems from SCAD even tho they have a parking lot.
As a former Savannah resident I can attest that this Assembly Hall is a bad idea. As one who now lives in a small city overrun by the very things this Assembly Hall would bring, I can assure you that Savannah doesn't want nor need it.
There must be a reasonable balance between residential and tourism interest. Incremental increases are insidious if they do not take into consideration the cumulative impact of previous decisions. Please consider the stress existing enterprises on the neighborhoods infrastructure when considering this variance.
I lived next door to the Whitman. Amplified music was disruptive. It was difficult to find a parking space when there were events, hardly enough spaces for the long term residents that have lived there and pay hefty taxes. This is a quiet neighborhood. Like Savannah’s quest to maintain
An assembly hall is inappropriate in a residential neighborhood. Some of us have been neighbors for 44 years. I can't borrow a cup of sugar from an out-of-state corporation.
Please do not continue to destroy Savannah
This is an opportunity for the new City Council to show that they stand with the residents of Savannah, not just with tourist businesses.

This looks like recipe more noise, huge parking, issues. more drinking, and fewer. Maybe it is time to consider the people who made the Victorian district by investing in it rather than those whose only motive is to profit by what We have built.
