The decision to rename NSU College of Optometry, the National Vision College of Optometry, was made shamelessly without having considered the opinion of staff, current students, and alumni. The justification of this name change by saying that the injected funds will be used for outreach, scholarships, and research is blatantly naive. We feel that the affiliation of this college with any corporate entity compromises the integrity of our profession. This decision will certainly tarnish the values and image of the college and we want to put a stop to it.

How does an organization that has a documented history of being a 7.5 minute refraction mill get its name on an educational institution, a place where students learn to adhere to practice standards? What's next? Pfizer's name being outside a urology center?

This is so unfortunate. If we allow a corporation to PURCHASE a school, rather than treating their endowment as the show of support it should be, we cheapen that degree, and the profession as a whole. What a slippery slope you are leading us down. Shame on you, NSU!

It’s a disgrace that reflects poorly on the whole profession. Optometry schools are not sports stadiums. What other college or university would ever name one of its degree programs after a company? It cheapens the degree, the school, and the profession.

Frankly, it is quite embarrassing that this would ever happen to a professional school. This is not only a huge conflict of interest, but it blatantly disregards the sentiments of current and former faculty/students/alumni. Completely disrespects Doctors of Optometry!

I just sent 2 of my technicians (central Michigan university students) to Nova after highly recommending the program. They were accepted and are attending. If this name change goes through, I will not be recommending the school any longer.

It’s such a shame that money is degrading the value of our profession. This will affect NOVA in the future. Who wants to go to a school that sells out students, alumni and staff. I will not attend CE nor donate to NOVA if this happen.

This is a really unfortunate conflict of interests and the wrong direction for any medical education. It really calls into question the integrity of all those associated with this.
