QUICKLY AND QUIETLY is exactly how
Aurecon plan to gain the Council’s permission to construct NBN infrastructure
in Cooran. Few residents are aware that a 35m NBN tower is to be constructed in
a semi-rural/residential area of Coles Creek Road.
This structure will devalue the property investment of twenty plus properties in direct view of the tower. This will have a domino effect on all Cooran properties as well as those in surrounding suburbs – meaning all property values will decrease - a fact that Aurecon refusesto address.
We’re not against progress; NBN will benefit some residents, but should not be approved at the expense of property owners. Aurecon will not answer the direct question of who will even benefit. An Aurecon representative has even stated that the tower’s signal will be compromised outside of a 3km range.
Aurecon are also keeping residents in the dark about a site share agreement with other telecommunication providers for purposes of co-location. This means the 35m eyesore will only be the beginning and soon enough several structures will blight our hill, like they do in view from Black Mountain Road.
The way Aurecon do business is a problem; all spin-doctoring and no regard for locals. Many residents are angry that only the land owner, whose property will be financially contracted, was directly consulted. Aurecon’s only rebuttal after ignoring this and many other pertinent questions was that they followed due process and without request held a community meeting for “good relations” – few petition signers from the local area were aware this meeting ever took place.
Aurecon have stated that they have moved proposed tower locations in the past through community intervention when there was a second viable option. Offended residents of our community are lobbying to have this tower relocated. Alternative locations include the vast surrounding government forestry or to co-locate infrastructure on top of existing communications towers as they’ve done in Gympie. With Council intervention we could simply reject the proposed location and request Aurecon representatives, who have Urban and Regional Planning qualifications and detailed aerial maps, tosource an alternative site rather than push for the location most expedient for them and inconvenient for us.

I wonder if Aurecon CEO, Paul Hardy would agree to the tower being built on his land...?
Im so proud of you! Its so good to see that you are standing up for your rights! Im sure you would not have bought the your beautiful property if you knew there would have been a tower erected to spoil the uninterrupted views from your home.
It is very clear from your uninformed comments Mr. Goltzman that you are not familiar with the said area. I am puzzled as to why someone who obviously has no idea of where the proposed tower is going and where the possible alternative sites (as nominated by Noosa Council) are situated, feels the need to communicate in such a hostile manner and personally attack Melissa Town in a somewhat irrational manner.
Oh also, Ms. Town (Ive been saying Mrs. this whole time, my apologies) knows that the tower will greatly benefit "some" residents (Not everyone, since radio signals discriminate apparently). I don't see how that lines up with the active effort to make it benefit LESS residents by moving it to a sub-optimal location further away from the community. Also the claim that her proposed relocation is just as good as the current one. Does Ms. Town know exactly how the towers work and how they interface with each other? The towers are a network and require line of sight to each other due to Microwave backhaul. It is not a matter of being 'high enough'. This is not a satellite connection where you need a clear view of the sky. The higher and further away a tower is from an antenna the worse the connection will be. Besides, I admit I'm not familiar with the area but if the tower is high up on forestry land... doesn't that mean it is more visible to more properties and is now 'destroying the semi-rural lifestyle' of more people? It has too, because if there is enough trees in the way then the tower signal will attenuate massively and become useless. This, plus will necessitate the bulldozing of trees and destruction of wildlife habitats both around the tower itself and the newly laid road towards it? Does Ms. Town not care about that?
I was going to post in the Noosa News website (http://www.noosanews.com.au/news/towering-battle-begins/2178986/#comments), but then i realized that through this petition I can talk to the people of Cooran directly, hopefully without being moderated too much and with a greater word allowance! First, here is the research paper Mrs Town is likely referring too: http://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/pr/2011/pdfs/pr208_E.pdf "The evidence was reviewed critically, and overall evaluated as being limited among users of wireless telephones for glioma and acoustic neuroma, and inadequate to draw conclusions for other types of cancers." As you can see here, the very organization and paper Melissa cites doesn't support her. Now that that is out of the way, lets look at her other 'concerns' stemming from mostly emotional and some financial issues: "destroy their semi-rural lifestyle" Wow. Talk about hyperbole. The tower is going to run around tearing up forests and killing livestock? Do these residents also complain about poor mobile coverage? She said she supports the NBN, so clearly internet access isn't destroying anything. If the service the tower provides 'destroys their lifestyle' then they're free to not connect to it. "lower property values" Unless the locals are immortal, someone else is going to live on their land eventually. What will the new, heavily tech-savvy GenX, Y and Milennial retirees think when the retirement home they're considering is blanketed by a sub-par internet connection that doesn't serve their needs? interfere with locals' "peace of mind" How exactly are you quantifying this Melissa? Is there a 'piece of mind' calculator that i'm unaware of? This is nothing but emotional reactionism.
