We, the tenants of 901 Jefferson Street in Oakland, California, have formed a tenant association for the purpose of petitioning you to reconsider your approach to rent increases in our building.
While we believe reasonable rent increases are a part of life and doing business, we agree with neither the egregiously high increases that are being proposed nor the timeframe provided for us to make choices about signing a new lease or moving.
These increases and lack of decision-making time constitute a significant hardship on the families and friends who make up our beloved community.
Many people cannot put together a new security deposit in just 30 or 60 days, much less find a new home or budget in such a short time to start paying new amounts that can in some cases constitute a nearly 100% increase in existing rent.
We request that you rescind all pending rent increase notices and come to the table in good faith to discuss a more reasonable approach to rent increases in this building. Please respond in writing within 7 days.

The scale of this support has forced the management company to acknowledge the tenant association as a formal entity. We are currently drafting a follow-up letter to demand a meeting with their lead regional director.

Living here for a long time and never seen anything like this. A 90% jump is insane. Where are we supposed to go?
The renewal offer in fact gives 30 days to lock in a annual lease rate. That rate is NOT offered by the end of the 60 day period. Is this legal?
I have lived at 901approx. 7yrs... This sudden and unreasonable increase amounts to forced eviction in my opinion and can't be taken lightly.
I have been a resident at 901 Jefferson for over 5 years now and is shocked to see rent increases from 70% to over a 100%, set aside the fact that the residents of the entire building are being pushed out. That makes about 60 units. Its outrageous and should not be happening to anybody!
I've been a resident of 901 Jefferson for 5 years. To be forced out and given only two months to relocate is insulting, cold, immoral and disrespectful. Rent increases are understandable but this amount is more than 100% of current rent! This, coupled with being given an inadequate amount of time to relocate is why I am a part of this petition.
I have lived at 901 Jefferson for 5 years and have enjoyed it very much. I've been paying $1750 for my 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment for almost the entire time. The rent increased only about $50 over the course of these 5 years. Being given the "option" to pay for almost a 100% rent increase is unreasonable, unfounded and cruel. I understand that this is a trendy and popular neighborhood but as a 4th generation citizen of Oakland, this stings. Particularly since a Berkshire representative verbally promised that rents would not be increased more than 50%. I'm being asked to go from paying $1750 to $3050 in a matter of 2 months. Furthermore, being given 2 month to save up for a deposit, find a reasonable living space and to physically move is practically impossible. At the very least, more time needs to be given and deposits should be returned immediately upon moving. I've been told that it may take the leading office up to 45 days to return deposits to moved out tenants. Obviously tenants of limited financial means were NOT AT ALL taken into consideration when these terms were decided. Thank you for your help in this matter.

This is just greed plain and simple. How are people supposed to find a new place in Oakland with zero notice and double the rent? Total nightmare.
