I know firsthand what it's like to walk the hallways of Durbanville High School. During my time there, I faced bullying and neglect. Teachers seemed indifferent to the issues that truly mattered, yet now they are eager to push through policies that disregard the real needs of students. The proposed phone ban and the installation of gates by the bathrooms are unnecessary measures that will only waste resources and disrupt daily routines.
Giving up our phones means losing a critical tool for communication and learning. In emergencies or simply for educational purposes, smartphones are invaluable to students. Lockers are unlikely to be used efficiently, and this proposal failed to consider actual student usage habits. Evidence shows that phones can enhance learning when appropriately integrated into the school environment. Banning them enforces an outdated mindset that overlooks their educational potential.
Moreover, imposing gates by the bathroom disrupts the sense of safety and freedom. Instead of making students feel secure, it creates an environment of restriction and surveillance. Schools should be safe spaces where students feel comfortable, not trapped and controlled. Do you know how many students have been accidentally locked in or out of the bathrooms?
Please join us in urging Durbanville High School to reconsider these decisions and focus on what truly matters for the students' welfare. Please sign this petition to demand a supportive and meaningful change that reflects the authentic needs of the student body.
I'm signing because if there is an emergency at home parents cant tell the children immediately about it, instead the personal information will go through the school staff.
