Decision Makers: Hardin County Planning and Zoning Commission

We are asking the community to say no to the rezoning of 2305 Hodgenville Rd in Elizabethtown, KY from residential to commercial for an 8,000 sq. ft. Dollar General Store. This change would put a large commercial store into an area that is already residential, on a 2-lane state highway, and just before the beautiful Elizabethtown Country Club.

There is already a Dollar General Store 2.5 miles from the proposed site, and there are 7 Dollar General Stores within a 5-mile radius. Another store here is not what this community needs. What it would bring is more traffic, more noise, more lighting, and more pressure on nearby homes and properties. It would also change the character of a place that should stay safe, quiet, and suited to the people and families who live here.

This proposal also puts our Highland cattle farm at risk. Our farm adjoins the proposed site, sits downhill from it, and is already deemed highly erodible land. Any stormwater, trash, debris, oil, antifreeze, and other garbage from a commercial site can wash into our pasture to our cows while rapidly eroding our property. That is not fair to the farm, the land, or the people who depend on it.

If you live nearby, belong to the golf course, care about this area, or are friends of our farm, please stand with us and oppose this rezoning. Let’s protect our residential and agricultural community and keep it the safe, quiet place it is meant to be.

We moved here 15 years ago because we wanted to live outside of town and enjoy the peace, space, and country feel of our neighborhood. This proposed development would essentially be in our backyard and would significantly change the character of the area we chose to call home. Commercializing this area would bring increased traffic to 210, including more pedestrian traffic, which is already a dangerous concern.

My husband and I purchased this home partially due to the fact that it is outside city limits in a safe and quiet neighborhood. Unfortunately, adding a Dollar General will increase traffic in our small neighborhood and we want our children to be able to safely take a walk, ride a bike, or just go outside… another business is certainly not the answer.

There is absolutely no reason another Dollar General is needed in this area, especially when it directly (and negatively) impacts the residents that already exist. Listen to your actual constituents, stop chasing growth with your pocketbook regardless of the quality and leave the residential zoning in place.

The zoning change is directly across from our family home. Commercial properties do not belong in this area. It is a quiet, safe neighborhood. Traffic from a zone change will make it dangerous for anyone on this area to leave their driveways. Zoning states driveways must be more than 50 feet apart. Building an entrance to a commercial property will not be 50 feet from my driveway.

This is not about lack of access. There is 2 Dollar Generals close by both ways down the road. We love here for the more rural nature and support the Brackett Farm.
