September 2026 A PETITION BY ENCINITAS RESIDENTS
To the Encinitas City Council:
Enough.
For years, Santa Fe Drive has been the subject of community meetings, engineering studies, construction, controversy, elections, and political disagreement. People on all sides have had the opportunity to make their voices heard.
The State of California has now weighed in as well. The recently enacted State budget protects the State’s $3.09 million investment in the west Santa Fe Drive improvements and creates conditions that could make removing recently completed improvements very costly for Encinitas taxpayers.
We ask the Encinitas City Council not to spend additional taxpayer money challenging the State in court or pursuing the removal of recently constructed improvements on west Santa Fe Drive.
Instead, the City should focus its time and resources on making the entire corridor safer and more functional for everyone who uses it: pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and especially students, nearby residents and businesses.
That means paying particular attention to the yet unimproved east section of Santa Fe Drive between Lake Drive and El Camino Real. Unlike the recently improved western portion of the corridor, the east stretch still lacks safe and comfortable space for pedestrians and cyclists and remains an important missing link in the corridor. Rather than spending public money undoing improvements that are already in place, the City should work toward completing a safer, connected, multimodal Santa Fe Drive from one end to the other.
There are valid concerns about the recently completed west portion of Santa Fe Drive, and those concerns deserve to be addressed. But addressing them does not require tearing out the majority of the recently improved western stretch of Santa Fe or extending a community fight that has already consumed too much time, energy, and money.
Santa Fe Drive is safer than before. Improve, don’t remove.

I ride my bicycle around Encinitas, and now feel safer on Santa Fe Drive. There are unfunded priorities to enhance safety and quality of life - focus on these, not on a project that is working.
