We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully request that the City of San Diego conduct a Traffic Engineering safety evaluation of the intersection of Copeland Ave & Copeland Pl.
This intersection is part of the local pedestrian network and is regularly used by neighborhood residents, including elementary-aged children walking to and from Franklin Elementary. Right now, the area does not have clearly defined pedestrian infrastructure, which means people on foot are sharing a narrow roadway space with vehicle traffic. This creates an unsafe and uncomfortable crossing for families and other residents who use these streets every day.
We also note that an active multi-unit development permit is currently under City review for property at the intersection (PRJ-1136903). If approved as designed, this will further constrain the corner. Large service vehicles, including garbage and recycling trucks, already have difficulty navigating the turn. This raises concerns about roadway geometry, turning movement constraints, and emergency vehicle access.
We are asking the City of San Diego Transportation Department to complete a Traffic Engineering review and warrant-based evaluation to determine whether the intersection meets criteria for safety improvements, including but not limited to sidewalk connectivity and pedestrian access improvements, a marked pedestrian crosswalk or enhanced crossing treatment, and right-of-way verification to assess the feasibility of infrastructure improvements.
This petition is not intended to oppose any specific development project. It is a request to make sure current and future conditions at Copeland Ave & Copeland Pl are properly reviewed so the street works safely and functions well for everyone who uses it.
We respectfully ask the City to prioritize a formal engineering-level review of this intersection.
Oh what an important initiative! This corner has been a big problem. The visibility is poor, the sidewalks stop existing at a point, and large utility vehicles like the 3 weekly Trash pickups already have to maneuver around it with complications. I would love to see this made safer. We have an elementary school a block away and the street gets lots of traffic from cars as well as bikes and pedestrians with little kids and parents trying to find parking and also navigating drop offs.
