We call for safer streets in Clerkenwell and Rosebery Avenue by restoring the roads to a layout that keeps traffic moving, makes crossings safer for pedestrians, and puts proper enforcement in place for cyclists who ignore the rules.
Those of us who live and travel through Clerkenwell and Rosebery Avenue are worried about the changes across these roads. The increase in congestion has made journeys slower and more difficult than before. Emergency vehicles are now struggling to get through, and that is a serious concern for everyone who depends on a quick response.
We are also concerned about the oversized cycle lanes. At the top of these roads and Grays Inn Road, the interchange-style cycle lane creates confusion and danger. Cyclists and vehicles are ending up in conflict, with near misses and collisions when red lights are not respected. We support cycling, but the design should work for everyone, not leave people feeling unsafe.
The cycle lane should be made smaller and reintegrated as part of the road so drivers can better see pedestrians waiting to cross, especially at the Clerkenwell Road crossing. Additional signage should be added to ask cyclists to stop at the crossing and allow pedestrians to cross safely. Rumble strips should also be placed on or before the crossings to slow cars and cyclists down.
What we need most is proper enforcement. Existing rules already say cyclists can be fined £50 for jumping a red light, failing to stop at a crossing while a pedestrian is using it, or riding on a footpath. Those rules need to be enforced with a stronger police or enforcement presence on the street. The answer is not just more redesign. It is making sure the rules are actually followed, so our roads can be safer and more orderly for everyone who lives, works, and travels here.
The new road layout is dangerous!! I have nearly been hit by cars and bikes (who are not using the new cycle lanes). The congestion is worse than ever at busy times- sometimes with the new traffic lights rotation 3 cars can get through on the green. Cyclists are not abiding by the traffic lights and are going when pedestrians have right if way. What will it take for it to be realised the new layout is dangerous? Someone to be hit and killed? A child?
