We the undersigned would like Islington and Hackney Councils to tackle the traffic safety and noise issues on New North Road such as the constant breach of the 20mph speed limit, noisy exhausts and dangerous junctions.

We would like this done immediately through signalisation of junctions, provisions for cyclists and installation of speed tables.

Seeing the momentum grow is sobering because it confirms just how many of us are living with this constant danger every single day. I am exhausted by the state of this road but these signatures prove we are nowhere near finished.

I support London cyclists but not on such a narrow towpath with dogs, children and walkers sharing such a small space. The bike commuters do not respent the space and cycle far too quickly. It's a very dangerous area.

I'm a cyclist of 40 odd years both in London and abroad. I don't want to be forced off the road or off of my bike due to the traffic planning not keeping in tandem with the increase of traffic!

I fully support this petition. In particular the stretch between Wenlock barn and the bridge over the canal at Baring Street is treated as a speedway, particularly by motorcyclists. I have observed several times that motorists, motorbike riders and also cyclists heading north have been going so fast that they have actually been unable to stop when the lights just before Eagle Wharf Road changed to red. Crossing the road is a lottery, even at the pedestrian crossing, and someone will eventually be killed. Speed cameras south of the crossing may help.

The New North Road is very dangerous, in particular for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the road. I stopped cycling along the New North Road when a White Van Driver almost pulled out of Baring Street by the canal as he had not seen me (‘sorry mate’). I was wearing a HiVi and it was day time. I once crossed the pedestrian crossing on New North Road beside Eagle Wharf Road. A bus has stopped for me to cross; a car driver decided to overtake the bus through the red light. Half a second further across the road without looking past the bus and I would have been killed. Most people cross the New North Road opposite the Co-Op. This is a very dangerous crossing point.

Traffic signals are long overdue at the junction where Eagle Wharf Road meets New North Road. An entire cycle route remains deserted while this junction is so lethal. In one fell swoop this seemingly isolated change could revive a cycle route and take the strain off the towpath. Why must we wait any longer? What can anybody be frightened of?

An excellent initiative and much needed. This is a great chance for real change. I hope we can be ambitious about the improvements, particularly so that "provisions for cyclists" are bold enough.

If cycling on the road is too dangerous it does not give cyclists the right to ride on pavements and towpaths so making it dangerous for pedestrians!

Get the cyclists off the towpath - pedestrians don't walk in the cycle lanes so why put bicycles on the towpath?
