I'm simply collecting names to see whether there is enough community interest to explore this idea with the City of Thunder Bay.
Hillcrest Park is already a popular place to exercise. People walk and run the park, climb the stairs, do bodyweight exercises, and use the park as part of their regular fitness routines.
The idea is simple: add a small, durable outdoor calisthenics and fitness area to the underused corner where the old playground once stood.
The area is already shaded and has existing prepared/paved sections. Giving it a new purpose could also bring more regular activity into a part of Hillcrest that is currently underused and that some residents tend to avoid.
The equipment could include things like pull-up bars, parallel and dip bars, step platforms, balance equipment, monkey bars, an ab bench, and a rope station. The focus would be on simple, durable equipment without complicated moving mechanical parts.
It could provide:
- Free fitness place to exercise without needing a gym membership.
- Healthy aging with equipment for strength, mobility, and balance for older adults.
- Youth recreation as another free and constructive place for young people to be active.
- A better-used park to bring regular community activity into an underused corner of Hillcrest.
- More options for existing users to complement the walking, running, stairs, sports, and other exercise already happening throughout the park.
Right now, I'm just trying to find out whether people would actually want this.
If there's enough community interest, I'll bring that support, along with the concept and preliminary research, to the City and our local representative to see whether the idea is feasible.
Would you support exploring an outdoor calisthenics and fitness area at Hillcrest Park?
If yes, add your name. Your signature simply helps demonstrate that there is community interest in exploring the idea.
Similar to boulevard park, this would be a great addition to bring some life back to this part of the park.y only suggestion would be that it’s open to all users, including kids and have equipment that can be used by them too!
