Protect Classroom Stability at Canyon View Elementary
Dear Canyons School District Leaders,
We are writing to express concern about the obligatory transfer that led to disruptive teacher reassignments which occurred approximately three weeks into the school year at Canyon View Elementary. Changes of this nature significantly affect students, families, and educators, especially after classroom routines, instructional plans, and relationships have already begun to develop.
We respectfully request information about the process and policies that led to this district decision.
In addition, we ask the district to develop and openly share a clear plan to prevent similar disruptions in the future. This plan should include earlier staffing projections, timely communication with school communities, contingency planning for enrollment changes and staffing shortages, and set budgets before the first day of school. No Canyons District school should have to undergo the emotional and logistical upheaval that Canyon View has experienced this year due to this district decision made after the school year began.
We are also asking the district to consider additional funding and support to provide instructional aides and intervention support for our classrooms with more than 30 students. Overcrowded classrooms place a substantial burden on teachers. It becomes increasingly difficult to provide individualized attention, maintain a positive learning environment, and meet the district-imposed academic and social-emotional needs of every student.
We value the work of Canyons School District, and want to partner in finding constructive solutions. Families and educators deserve timely decisions made prior to the first day of school and adequate resources to provide high-quality education in the face of enrollment challenges. We would appreciate a written response outlining the decision-making process, the steps being taken to prevent future disruptions, and how the district will address the needs of our classrooms with a high number of students.

Shame on Canyon School District for making such a disruptive decision just weeks into the school year. Taking away a third grade teacher putting over 30 students in classrooms and then pulling a first grade teacher to compensate is unacceptable. Our children deserve stability and better planning. This was a huge mistake and we are not okay with it.
This is unacceptable. Our daughter loved her 3rd grade teacher, class of 21, and that she had a couple of her best friends in her class. Over one weekend the class is dissolved, she has a new teacher with 30 other kids, and all her friends are in the other class. This was an unnecessary disruption. It’s ridiculous this happened 3 weeks in. All due to 13 less kids enrolled, which is 2 per grade - that is an unreasonable margin/buffer! This should never happen again to our kids and these teachers.
This affects my child he is in third grade. And does not deserve to have 30 and 31 kids in his class these kids deserve more than that.
The teachers and staff work so hard for our students and this change caused quite a bit of disruption for all involved. Students need stability and to have a safe consistent environment. It seems very disappointing and dysfunctional for the district to do these changes 3 weeks into the school year over a minimal attendance variance. Plus moving the teachers that had their systems in place already for their current students is a huge burden on them. Please review your policy's on this!
As the parent of a third-grade student directly affected, I am disappointed. Our children spent the first three weeks of school getting settled into their classrooms, building relationships, learning routines, and beginning to feel comfortable and confident in a new school year. Then, through no fault of their own, that stability was taken away. Asking children to start over in a larger classroom has a real emotional and educational impact. These are young children, not numbers on a spreadsheet.
It’s ridiculous that this was part of any regular protocol. This kind of disruption is clearly detrimental to the education of these children.
This is completely unacceptable. The district says they are putting students first but clearly they don’t care that much about student wellbeing to make changes like this after 3 weeks of school.

The district needs to speak to why teacher reassignments are being made after the school year has started. My child's school also had teacher reassignments. 3 weeks in decisions should have already been made. These changes affect the whole school: parents, teachers, staff, & most importantly the students. Teachers need time to plan and transition grades. Students deserve decent class sizes and consistency. Learning is disrupted with these decisions. How did this happen? Seems irresponsible.
