Dear Region 20 Board of Education and School Superintendent,
We are writing to express our strong opposition to the reduction of teachers and consequent increase in class size for second grade at Litchfield Center School. As concerned parents and community members, we believe that this decision would have a detrimental impact on the quality of education our children receive.
First and foremost, we believe that the elimination of a second-grade class would hinder the development of our children, as this is a pivotal time where their academic, social, and emotional growth is particularly crucial. Larger class sizes would inevitably lead to less personalized instruction and support, making it more challenging for teachers to address the unique and diverse learning needs of each student.
Furthermore, increasing class sizes can also lead to higher levels of stress and burnout among teachers, which can negatively impact their ability to teach effectively. A supportive and manageable classroom environment is important for maintaining high teaching standards and ensuring that teachers can provide the best possible education for our children.
While we recognize that this consolidation is based solely on student headcount, meeting the needs of all students will become more challenging with larger class sizes. Our community values education and understands that investing in our children’s early years is fundamental to their long-term success. We urge the board to take our concerns into consideration and explore feasible solutions to prioritize the well-being and academic success of our students.

The scale of this response confirms the need to move our concerns beyond the public comment period. I have initiated contact with the school board to request a formal review of the second grade staffing model. Expect an update once a meeting time is confirmed.

As a retired teacher I am very aware of the consequences of large class sizes. The administration should address this issue immediately.
We all know the importance of small class sizes and that is the highlight of both districts. My question is why the board is making so many changes at the elementary level. All four elementary schools were functioning, well and in all of the meetings with Chris Leone before the vote to merge, gave the impression that the elementary schools would not have major changes. I suggest that the board focus on the middle and high school, which are merging and have the greatest changes. The board’s focus right now should be on those two schools. There is still a lot of work to be done especially at the high school level.
I feel that smaller classes is better for the kids who need more one on one time or individually time. Rather than 20 in a class where the kids won’t get the proper time They might need.
Please reevaluate this decision. Our schools have built a reputation of excellence over the years based on careful consideration of what works and what is needed at this grade level. Studies point to the detrimental impact of larger class sizes. I am assuming the class arrangement of this cohort is an oversight and the board will continue to put children and academic excellence first. At the elementary level, we are setting the foundation for math and reading skills that are pivotal to a student’s ability to work with more advanced concepts. We must do everything in our power to safeguard our youngest student’s academic progress so we do not set them up to struggle academically and emotionally in their later years.
Smaller class sizes are proven to be beneficial to the students. Going to larger class sizes will take away from the quality of education these kids are receiving. I did not think that was the intent of this merger.
This needs to be for center school class sizes as a whole, they are increasing class sizes from K-3
We were promised a better education standards. Can’t do that with bigger classrooms
