We are asking the community for help. Our goal is to have the Mahopac Central School District reconsider the decision to transfer the school psychologist from The Mahopac Falls Academy and maintain the stability and leadership our students depend upon.
Mahopac Falls Academy serves some of the district’s most vulnerable students, including children who often struggle with anxiety, emotional regulation, school avoidance, and other significant challenges. For these students, consistency is not simply beneficial; it is essential to their success.
The current school psychologist has been a vital part of the Academy’s foundation, helping build the program into a safe, supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and regain confidence. Families have trusted the Academy because of the relationships, structure, and stability that have been carefully developed over many years.
We are deeply concerned that this decision was made without meaningful input from families and without a clearly communicated transition plan. To date, many parents have not received formal notification outlining how this change will affect their children or how continuity of care and support will be maintained. Perhaps most concerning is that when families have asked why this transfer is necessary, district leadership has been unable to provide a clear explanation of how this decision benefits the students of the Mahopac Falls Academy. Parents have repeatedly sought answers regarding the educational, emotional, and programmatic advantages of this change, yet no compelling rationale has been provided.
A sudden leadership change in a highly specialized program can have serious consequences for students who rely on predictable routines and trusted relationships. Many of our children have worked incredibly hard to overcome barriers to attending school, participating in class, and feeling emotionally safe. Disrupting that progress without a comprehensive transition plan puts their hard-earned success at risk.
Our children deserve the same consideration, respect, and advocacy as every other student in the district. Their needs matter. Their voices matter. Their futures matter.
This petition is not about resisting change. It is about protecting the students who depend on the Mahopac Falls Academy and ensuring that decisions affecting their well-being are made thoughtfully, transparently, and with their best interests at heart.
We ask the Mahopac Central School District to reconsider this decision and keep the school psychologist at The Mahopac Falls Academy.

Falls Academy is a truly exceptional program, and Mrs. Desombre has played a central role in creating the stability, trust, and sense of belonging that so many students and families rely upon. In speaking with other parents, it is clear that while the teachers are highly valued, Mrs. Desombre serves as the connective tissue of the program, supporting students, partnering with families, and helping ensure that each child receives the consistency they need to thrive.
Being a teacher it is very advisable to have a in school psychologist that can help manage to children’s emotions. Most teachers are not equipped with these tools for nervous system regulation, or even knowing how to be trauma informed.
My daughter went to the academy and the school psychologist played an extremely important role in the program. She is a huge part of her success.
Ashley is the heart of the program if she is removed it will fall apart and the children including my grandson will be unjustly impacted.

The educational and emotional support for our children should not be compromised for whatever political or personal agendas.

Speaking as a parent/community member- I couldn’t agree more with keeping the current psychologist where she is. Our children should be at the forefront of decisions being made at all times. She is the pillar of the this program and many students are successful due to her support and passion.
