What’s happening?
A company called BUZZ HPC recently purchased a 25 acre plot of land in Oakville, Ontario (on 3480 Ninth Line). They intend to use this land to build an “AI gigafactory” data centre in late 2027. An application to start the construction has not been submitted to the Town of Oakville yet, meaning there is still time to prevent this from moving forwards.
Why does this need to be stopped?
Aside from personal views on AI usage, this data centre will do irreparable harm to our community if it is built. It will have negative environmental impacts on property, the ecosystem, water systems, residents, and animals (this is especially harmful for the wildlife since the field that has been purchased is the habitat for a threatened species of bird, the bobolink). It will also have very high water consumption and energy demands leading to high utility bills, noise pollution, water pollution, and air pollution. It also poses a risk for emergencies such as fires since data centres become extremely hot when in use.
How can you help?
By signing this petition, you can go a long way to preventing this plan from going through. Though petitions with a high number of signatures do not directly mean this plan will be stopped, it will raise awareness for the issue as well as put pressure on our city’s politicians to carefully consider the pros and cons of this data centre.

October 19, 2026
On August 11th, Oakville Council voted 14-0 to pass an Interim Control By-Law. This bylaw means data centre development is banned for the next 1 year (but it can be extended to a 2 year ban) in Oakville. At least for the meantime, our petition worked! However, we still need more signatures to stop data centre construction in our town PERMANENTLY.

There's lots of land in northern ontario, we do not need this in Oakville. Move it elsewhere that it doesn't affect people living in their homes.
Will greatly affect the environment of nearby neighborhoods in Mississauga. Plus heavy, steady traffic on Burnhamthorpe Road for years. Noise pollution.
Oakville and North Oakville is not a place to dump AI waste. Data centre environmental impact on humans, animals and environment are at best not fully understood and at worst catastrophic. There is no benefit to the community. The end users could lie anywhere in the world.
I am signing this petition because there is no benefit or good reason to build an AI data centre. All it will do is consume unnecessary amounts of energy, steal the amount of safe drinking water we have, and incessantly disturb local families and children trying to live a normal life like everyone else. It’s a waste of taxpayers money and a horrible representation of Canada to build such idiotic sites.
Higher cost to my residential bills. Also the environmental impact on my community
I strongly oppose turning our community into an infrastructure hub for Big Tech. We’ve already seen communities forced to live with the consequences of massive data centres: industrial noise, extraordinary electricity and water demands, pollution concerns and pressure on local infrastructure — often for relatively few permanent jobs. And the irony is impossible to ignore: we’re being asked to sacrifice local resources to power AI while AI itself threatens to disrupt jobs on an enormous scale.
Data centres don’t belong in Oakville. And if there are any it should be scrutinized and focused on to ensure it does not affect the community
