The Issue
We, the residents of Washington County, Pennsylvania, formally oppose the proposed development of a hyperscale data center at the 1,500-acre Zediker Station site. While marketed as "sustainable" and "carbon-neutral" through the use of remediated mine gas, this massive industrial project threatens our community’s resources, quality of life, and economic stability.
Why We Oppose This Project
* Straining Our Power Grid: Data centers of this scale can consume as much electricity as hundreds of thousands of homes. This immense demand often leads to rising utility rates for local residents as providers pass on infrastructure costs to consumers.
* Massive Water Consumption:Cooling these facilities requires millions of gallons of water daily. We are concerned about the long-term impact on our local watershed and potential depletion of municipal water supplies during droughts.
* Noise and Light Pollution: The constant "hum" from high-powered cooling fans and backup diesel generators creates persistent noise pollution that can be heard for miles, disrupting peaceful neighborhoods and local wildlife.
* Minimal Job Creation: Despite the massive land use, operational data centers typically employ only a few dozen permanent staff after the initial construction phase ends.
* Impact on Property Values:Transforming 1,500 acres of rural and former farmland into a high-density industrial "server farm" can negatively impact adjacent residential property values and the rural character of our county.
Our Demand
We call upon our local officials to:
1. Halt Rezoning and Permitting: Deny any special use permits or rezoning requests for data center development at Zediker Station or other non-industrial zones.
2. Conduct Independent Impact Studies:Require comprehensive, independent environmental and economic impact assessments that prioritize residents over corporate interests.
3. Prioritize Resident Welfare: Protect our utility rates and natural resources from industrial exploitation.
