Someone has made a complaint to the Brisbane City Council about the pantry, raising their concerns/criticisms about the shelter on the footpath, where pantry customers park and the crowds at bread distribution times.

We would like to work with the council to address these concerns while still operating the pantry in its current location.

We would love your support to do this! Please sign, share and help us keep reducing food waste and feeding the people who need it in our community.

More information:
The pantry has been operating for over two years already. We have three bread distributions a week, with surplus products from two different bakeries. The pantry is on the footpath, which makes it accessible 24/7. This location allows access to be anonymous and discreet if required. The pantry is filled twice a day with items donated by the community.

We don’t want to shut the pantry down. We feed so many people. Unhoused, housed and struggling, couch surfing, people living in cars, families who have to choose whether to eat and stay home or put petrol in the car and actually go anywhere. People who don’t like food waste. People who get bread from us because that means they can buy fruit that week. People who take bread but then also donate pantry goods to things from their gardens. We donate bread to a local school every week to feed the kids who don’t have lunch. We save kilos and kilos of food from landfill, every week. Not to brag but also, yes to brag, because we are proud of this.

We’ve worked so hard on this, and so have our volunteers, currently 11 local humans who give their time and energy to pulling this off every week. We have so many excellent supporters, so many local businesses, families and individuals who think of us when something perfectly fine is destined for the bin, or when they’re doing their own groceries or a pantry clear out.

We also know that sometimes people come along to the pantry for a chat because they’re lonely or isolated or just haven’t really felt like anyone has actually seen them that day. There is just as much value in that as in the food bit.

Supporting this petition shows that you don’t want people in your community to go hungry, not here and now in this wealthy country at a time of abundance.

Thank you!

This helps our community look after those in need . Just like when I was a kid neighbors helped each other but these days we don’t know our neighbours so this pantry helps us all connect and make a connection with those who are in real need. Do not take this away from us !!!

It’s a good supportive way to help people we have personally, helped with supplies for the pantry when we can. This is what community is about it’s not hurting anyone it’s helping so many people and reducing waste for a lot of other companies also. With living cost this small gesture is helping so many people, families make each week just that little bit easier

Because this is a much needed charity food pantry in this area for people that are less fortunate or with the cost of living today cannot afford to feed their families. This food bank needs to stay put.

This pantry feeds so many people in need. Nelita and the volunteers do such an amazing job and to lose it would be a huge loss to our community

Because on more than one occasion this small stall has helped me get bread so we can eat sandwiches for lunches and toast for breakfast. It has been a godsend.

This community let initiative is providing hope & food for those who are struggling & have been abandoned by the system. This initiative is people centric, communities helping each other during rough times. How can the council be opposed to supporting such a community driven project that helps people in need.
