We, the undersigned parents and community members, believe firmly that Junipero Serra Elementary should remain open. This is a beloved, diverse community school, in a close-knit neighborhood where nearly a third of children bike and walk to school, made possible by our safe streets, crossing guards and unique campus, with its three entrances to school.
Our facilities, although perhaps more expensive on the surface, are spacious enough to absorb the student body of area schools, if any of them are forced to shutter their doors. They would be welcomed at J. Serra, a school that feels like a family.
A continued investment into our school is an investment in our children's future -- as one of two VUSD schools that meets or exceeds state performance in all categories, we have a proven track record. In fact, we are the only school in VUSD with a "green" designation for attendance. Serra students want to be at school. We are asking the VUSD board of Education to ensure that they will have the opportunity to do so.
J Serra is at the top of the list for academics, we are a blue ribbon school and our attendance rate very rarely drops below 97%! Closing the school would directly affect the academic records we worked so hard with our kids to obtain. Our duty is to serve the community to its highest standards and we can’t do that without your support. It’s not for us, it’s for our children and the future we help build for them.
