The students at New Mexico State University who take residency within their Chamisa Village upperclassmen residency have been dealing with a lack of hot water and water in general for the past two months. Throughout the whole ordeal, New Mexico State University has failed to take accountability and responsibility, offering empty promises and keeping students in the dark with updates. With the poor housing conditions and lack of water resources New Mexico State University is required to provide, we students demand to be compensated for our time at Chamisa Village.

Department Heads are Being Informed!
October 7, 2026
Good morning, everyone. I felt it was important to send out some news regarding how we're moving forward with the petition. Thanks to all your support, we have collected 330 signatures, and with this significant number of supporters, it is time to start bringing it to the attention of the department heads. As of now, Facilities and Services and the Director of Housing have been informed of the petition, the number of signatures, and its goals. I will continue to send out emails to those it concerns, but I do ask for your patience. Like many of you, I am also a student here with obligations to my studies, and I am currently the only organizer of this petition. There are still ways you can help out, though! The continued collection of signatures and sharing the petition are all still greatly appreciated. Emailing those responsible for housing is deeply appreciated as well! Get your own personal experiences out there and show them that this isn't something to sweep under the rug! Stay safe, keep reporting what you're experiencing, and I hope this all gets resolved soon!
250 Signatures!

We have officially reached 250 signatures! I keep saying it but thank you all again for your continued support. Your support and outreach truly are making a difference. Many students here who have signed the petition have gone on to get the attention of news networks and other outside organizations. I commend every one of them for their efforts and ask that they continue reaching out; any way of getting this issue to the university helps immensely towards the cause!

100 Signatures and Counting!
October 6, 2026
I am happy to report that we not only hit our signature goal, but we have exceeded it by far more than I imagined! Thank you all so much for your support. I will continue to encourage people to keep offering their signatures and sharing the petition with others, as it helps to show a better scope of just how many people are being affected by these issues. Currently, I am looking into reaching out to more departments on campus to ensure that our voices are heard! Keep up the good work, everyone!

We Have Officially Reached 50 Signatures!
October 6, 2026
Thank you so much to everyone who's pitched in so far to get us to the halfway point of this petition. Your support for this cause truly means the world to everyone living at Chamisa. Now is not the time to slow down our momentum, however! We still need 50 signatures to really finish this off, so keep sharing this petition with your friends and fellow residents. Don't be scared to reach out and stand up for what you, as a resident, deserve!

NMSU housing has had ample time to sort out these issues and they have stretched every issue much farther than necessary. The majority of the apartment complex has no hot water for two months, and now every apartment has been having constant water outages with no real updates or information. Housing says they "understand", but their houses all have functional utilities. This is ridiculous for the amount we pay as students who are already paying for school among everything else.
Hot water is a basic necessity and an essential part of safe, healthy, and livable housing. Students should not have to continue paying for housing while being expected to live without something as fundamental as hot water. Two months is too long. Our students deserve better. Please sign and help us make sure their voices are heard.
There shouldn't be a petition for this. Hot water and water in general should be a right when students are residing in dormitories that already cost an arm and a leg. COMPENSATE THEM!! This is BS.
I believe students at NMSU living in Chamisa Village deserve far better than what they have been presented thus far. We pay far too much to not be given access to services that were promised to us.
Not only is the water situation unacceptable but now the air conditioning system is not working. We pay a lot of money for housing. This is absolutely unacceptable…
Although I may not live at Chamisa, I actually live at VDM, I want my peers and friends living at Chamisa to have the same quality of life as me at VDM. This is unfair from the university.
because living without water and hot water is awful.

My sister has been facing issues with water since moving in back in August. This is not okay. This has been affecting her quality of life. This needs to be resolved immediately.
