17/12/13: Moya Green has received my email and instructed one of her team to review the case. I should receive a reply shortly.

13/12/13: UPDATE: Unfortunately I have received a bland dismissal from Royal Mail. I have emailed the CEO to ask her to review the situation. Please feel free to email her your thoughts as well ([email protected]).

Royal Mail statement:

"Royal Mail closed the parcel collection hatch following an incident where a Royal Mail delivery vehicle made contact with a customer collecting an item. In reviewing the incident, our decision was that the parcel collection hatch in its previous location constituted an unacceptable risk to our customers’ safety. We will therefore maintain our current provision of a parcel access hatch in the Post Office branch, which allows our customers to collect their items safely, six days a week.

We make every effort to deliver mail to customers first time. If this is not possible because they are not at home when we attempt to deliver an item that needs a signature or is too large to fit through the letterbox, Royal Mail can now leave these items with a neighbour.

Alternatively, customers can arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them, or we can deliver the item to a different address within the same postcode area. This service can be arranged by calling the number on the card we leave or by visiting our website at www.royalmail.com"

Petition to re-open the Wokingham Royal Mail Parcel Collection Hatch.
Since Royal Mail closed the parcel collection hatch to the side of the main PO in Wokingham, collecting parcels has become a complete nightmare. The opening hours are severely restricted (the working day and 3 hours on a Saturday *only*). Queues and waiting times for parcels are excessive, it is chaos within the PO building and the staff are overwhelmed.

Closing the hatch in response to a solitary, minor incident (no injury sustained) in the face of decades of safe, trouble-free usage is complete overkill by Royal Mail. With theChristmaspeak postal season fast approaching, the queues will soon increase to the point of utter ridiculousness, beyond what it is now.

Please reinstate the Delivery Office and previous opening hours.

A very short-sighted move, as the requirement for parcel shipping increases. Does Royal Mail want to leave the parcel post business. Please reconsider.

Really inconvenient for those of us who live but do not work in Wokingham and who cannot always get to therapist office at the weekend given other family priorities.

One idiot not paying attention has inspired one jobsworth to penalise parcel collectors. Lets go back to the old days when legislation was not needed and people were responsible for their own actions.

This was a great service and has been greatly missed. Suggest a simple queue line painted on the floor, like a bike lane on the roads, might assist in pedestrians keeping out of the way of vehicles.

Ridiculous decision. If someone cant watch out for a van in a parking area that is on them not the rest of us. Change it back.

The queue at the main branch is a total nightmare now. Just paint a line on the ground and let us get our parcels back without the hassle.
