To help us track local support (White Lake, Muskegon Area, West-Michigan, Statewide) PLEASE type your CITY & STATE (Street Address NOT required).

I, the undersigned, support the Muskegon Conservation District's intent to implement a Mute Swan Control Program on White Lake (Muskegon County, MI) under a DNR permit.  The Muskegon Conservation District will implement this program under the DNR Mute Swan Management and Control Policy and Procedures with assistance from USDA Wildlife Services.

I recognize the Mute Swan is an invasive species negatively impacting the ecological health of lakes through competition with native species for food and nesting areas, directly and indirectly displacing native species, degrading habitat, and altering food webs.  Mute swan populations have the potential to increase rapidly with statewide populations numbering approximately 15,500 individuals, while populations within White Lake number approximately 1,200 individuals; populations which may cause negative impacts to native wildlife, fisheries, and habitat.  It is also clearly understood that the Muskegon Conservation District will kill adult Mute swans to control and reduce populations within White Lake in the immediate future, and plans to implement nest and egg destruction activities once the populations reaches manageable levels.

I fully support efforts by the Muskegon Conservation District to control Mute swans locally, and further support the Michigan DNR's goal to reduce Michigan's population of this invasive species to less than 2,000 by 2030.
