I, the undersigned, petition the North Yorkshire County Council's Planning Committee to refuse planning permission for the expansion of Whitewall Quarry. Planning reference: NY/2012/0340/FUL.
The Quarry, operated by Clifford Watts, has applied for planning application to build a new asphalt plant in the existing quarry. Using Watts information, this will lead to
- A total of 97 HGV lorry movements per day;
- An increase in operating hours with a new start time of 5:30am;
- A change in the environmental permit status.

97 lorries a day?? Our roads can barely take the traffic we have now. This is going to be a nightmare for everyone living nearby.
NO WAY. we have enough pollution in the area already. leave our village alone.
1. The Quarry not abiding by existing restrictions - the quarry operators are not abiding by regulations in place with regard to warnings of explosives being used. Our 18thC stone house often shakes and windows rattle when blasting happens with no warning to the neighbourhood. We can hear and feel the “pounding” of the machinery that is used for the manufacture of concrete products/ready-mix concrete from early in the morning until late afternoon. It is our understanding that the operators have never been fully granted permission to do this. Are guarantees in place to stop them flouting any restrictions on future applications. 2. Traffic, Pollution, Congestion & Ratruns - Increasing the daily amount of large trucks using the local road (particularly Welham Road towards Norton/Malton) will be a disaster for the area. More noise, more pollution both dust from the quarry and diesel emissions from the trucks. The increased traffic on the already congested main roads will lead to ever more local traffic using narrow country lanes as short-cuts/ratruns to avoid the congestion. This is already noticeable down Whitewall/Bazeleys Lane where local traffic use it as a cut through to avoid the bottom of Welham Road and the congestion at the railway crossing/Bridge area. This is only set to get much worse when the petrol station opposite Lidl opens which will create another bottle neck/congestion point. There is the issue of traffic speeding down the narrow lanes - Whitewall/Bazeleys Lane included, very large trucks use it as a cut through to Langton Road, completely disregarding the weight limit sign. This has been brought to the attention of both Norton Town Council and North Yorkshire County Council Highways on several occasions with no attempt to look at traffic calming measures. It is a very well used route for walkers, with and without dogs. Will it take a very serious accident for any measures to be looked at? 3. Wolds - AONB - According to the plans on the website,
